At some point, Transformers will have to poke their chest out and give fans what they want. Throughout the movie franchise, Transformers has gone the safe route. But after Transformers: Rise of The Beast, it’s clear that something is missing.
To move the franchise along in the right direction, they must not be afraid to put it all on the line and change direction. Going back to the 80s cartoon movie— Transformers: The Movie, everything changed for kids who grew up on that series. Optimus Prime was killed and many other very popular Autobots and Decepticons. I hate that it was heartbreaking to watch as a kid, but it was needed.
Now, it seems that no one wants to bring that storyline back. The movie franchise has gone more of a PG route. While Prime has been beaten and battered, he still remains the leader and very much alive. But if anyone remembers Transformers: The Movie, they know that Prime’s death opened the door for a new leader—Hot Rod.
While Hot Rod was a figure in Transformers: The Last Knight, he did not get his just due. In Rise of the Beast, the stage was set. The big villain in this movie was Unicron. Going back to the cartoon movie, it was Unicron at the forefront as the villain as well. But in this version, Unicron was nothing more than a voice giving orders.
Who Will Die In The New Transformers Movie
Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Blurr, nor Kup was nowhere to be found. While we did get Arcee, it just wasn’t the same. We finally got an EXO-Suit but that was in the image of Mirage who lost his life but then was brought back at the end.
Even Bumblebee was killed but he was brought back. It’s like the writers want to mimic Transformers: The Movie but they were scared to actually pull the trigger on the big deaths. And then, they kept changing up the timeline. Rise of the Beast was set in 1994 while Bumblebee was set in 1987. According to the new timeline, everything is being set in motion. But will it continue that way?
I can understand the storytelling of it all but it’s getting a bit confusing and it’s not doing the franchise any good. With Bumblebee serving as the soft reboot of sorts, there is time for them to right the ship. With a 3rd installment coming and with Unicron not destroyed, the next movie could be when they decide to kill off some of the major characters and let Hot Rod take his rightful place as the leader.
What made the cartoon version so good was that no one expected any of it. Watching Prime die was hard. The same for Ironhide, Cliffjumper, and others. But to see the rise of Hot Rod aka Rodimus Prime was a blessing. It’s time to bring that feeling back to the franchise.
