5 Things We Learned About Week 1 In College Football
5) Has the Scott Frost era come to an end in Nebraska?
The Nebraska Cornhuskers lost to the Illinois Fighting Illini 30-22 on Saturday. This was a very disappointing loss for Nebraska fans. Quarterback Adrian Martinez disappeared for two quarters and came alive late in the game. He rushed for 111 yards and threw a passing TD as well. This is a team that was supposed to take the next step forward and they have not. Martinez is the only Nebraska football player to be the captain of the team for 3 straight seasons. Bret Bielema had his team well prepared and ready to play. Illinois was up 30-9 before Nebraska launched a comeback. I would be shocked if Frost is coaching in Nebraska next season. He is now 9-18 in conference play.
4) Chip Kelly has UCLA thinking big:
Chip Kelly was 33-3 in the PAC-12 when he coached at the University of Oregon. He is in his 4th year at UCLA, and he has compiled a record of 11-21. This team has high hopes for the 2021 season and on Saturday, they did not disappoint their fans. The Bruins led 31-3 at halftime against Hawaii before winning the game, 44-10. They did this without Heisman Trophy hopeful, Dorian Thompson-Robinson playing well. The quarterback was 10-20 for 130 yards and 1 passing touchdown. The Bruins dominated the line of scrimmage. They rushed for 244 yards and only gave up 26 rushing yards. If DTR can play well against LSU, they may have a chance to pull the upset when they face them in week 2.
3) Is Fresno State a top 25 team?
Fresno state shut out a poor Connecticut team, 45-0. Quarterback, Jake Haener threw for 331 yards and has three touchdown passes. Fresno State has an outside chance to be a TOP 25 team before the season end. They have talent on both sides of the ball. We will learn a lot about this team next week when they travel to Eugene Oregon to take on the #11 Ducks.
2) Who is the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy?
We may have a closer look at the Heisman race after week 1. Miami Quarterback, D’Eriq King faces #1 Alabama. Clemson quarterback, D.J. Uiagalelei faces #5 Georgia. Look for Spencer Rattler to win the Heisman this season. Lincoln Riley is the quarterback Whisperer. 2 of the last 3 quarterbacks he coached, Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield, won the award and Jalen Hurtz was a finalist in New York. Riley is an elite offensive coach and recruiter. Rattler has a ton of talent around him.
1) Is Maria Cristobal on the hot seat in Oregon?

The Ducks start the season at home against Fresno State. They will then travel to Columbus Ohio to take on #4 Ohio State. This is a team that has had a top 10 recruiting class over the past 3 years. Cristobal is getting paid $5.5 mil per season. Just winning 9 or 10 games may not be enough for the Oregon Alumni. If this team starts 0-2, Cristobal could start feeling the pressure.
