With a weekend amongst the trees looming around the corner for myself and the hubby, I thought I would tell you all a little about our favorite mountain town and its most famous attraction.
Nestled in the picturesque town of Estes Park, Colorado, The Stanley Hotel stands as a captivating symbol of elegance, history, and mystery. Built-in 1909 by Freelan Oscar Stanley, a co-founder of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, this place has become a beloved landmark and a source of intriguing stories.
The Stanley Hotel was originally constructed to provide a luxury retreat for the wealthy in the early 20th century. The hotel features 142 rooms and boasts sweeping views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Its design reflects the taste of that time period with its sprawling verandas, woodwork, and fancy interiors.
Stanley envisioned the hotel as a health resort for those suffering from tuberculosis, a common ailment of the time. The hotel’s altitude and fresh mountain air were believed to be beneficial for the condition. Over the years, however, The Stanley Hotel evolved into a popular destination for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure, and even a little bit of the paranormal.
The hotel has played a significant role in the arts, particularly in film. It gained international fame as the inspiration for Stephen King’s 1977 horror novel, “The Shining.” King and his wife stayed at The Stanley in 1974, and their experience inspired the eerie setting of the Overlook Hotel in the novel. The 1980 film adaptation directed by Stanley Kubrick further cemented The Stanley Hotel’s place in popular culture.
The Stanley Hotel’s association with “The Shining” has led to widespread reports of paranormal activity. Guests and staff have reported various unexplained phenomena, including ghostly apparitions, mysterious noises, and objects moving on their own. The hotels with its ghostly reputation has made it a popular destination for those intrigued by the supernatural. The hotel offers nightly ghost tours and has been featured in numerous paranormal investigations. One of which we will be attending on our trip, can’t wait for that!!
Today, The Stanley Hotel continues to attract visitors from around the world. It offers a range of amenities, including fine dining at the Cascades Restaurant, a historic bar, and various event spaces for weddings and corporate gatherings. The hotel’s rich history and picturesque setting make it a unique destination for those seeking a blend of luxury and history.
Additionally, The Stanley Hotel is dedicated to preserving its historical integrity while providing modern comforts. Recent renovations have updated the facilities while maintaining the original charm and character of the hotel.
