The Patriots fired Jerod Mayo after their win against the Buffalo Bills. At that point, they were in sole possession of the number one draft pick; all they needed to do was lose the game. However, Mayo knew he was done after the game, so he coached with the intention of winning. Buffalo also didn’t want to win; ultimately, the Patriots squandered the number one pick by beating Buffalo and fell to fourth in the draft order. Now, they must focus on finding their next head coach. I hope they go for Ben Johnson rather than Mike Vrabel.
After Jerod Mayo being Fired Go Get Ben Johnson
We don’t need another former Belichick assistant taking over, especially one who might bring back Josh McDaniels. What the Patriots need is someone with fresh, young ideas, like Ben Johnson in Detroit, who can work with young quarterback Drake Maye and help him develop further. We don’t want Mike Vrabel coming in here with Josh McDaniels. I’m looking for a new, young voice with an offensive mindset.
Jerod Mayo never got a Fair shot
Jerod Mayo really never got a fair shot. He became the head coach in 2019 under unusual circumstances. He was seen as the successor, and Robert Kraft was just waiting for the right moment to name him head coach. However, Mayo never actually called plays, which was Bill Belichick’s fault, as his son Steve handled that. How could Mayo be expected to manage an entire team when he didn’t have that experience? Just because he had a good relationship with the players didn’t mean his coaching would translate to success on the field, and it ultimately did not.
Mayo wanted to start Drake Maye from the beginning of the season. It was a collaborative decision, and Eliot Wolf chose Jacoby Brissett because Brissett was familiar with Alex Van Pelt’s system from their time in Cleveland. Unfortunately, the Browns’ style of play isn’t going to work for the spoiled Patriots fans who expect every quarterback to be like Tom Brady.
The fans want wins and aren’t accustomed to this losing streak. Kraft’s decision to fire Mayo so quickly was influenced by the fans. The fans are the ones buying tickets and funding the organization. Without them, how can Kraft maintain ownership of the team? His decision to let Mayo go was motivated by the negative impact it had on his business.

The next few weeks will be intriguing. Will Kraft hire Mike Vrabel or Ben Johnson? If the Patriots do bring in Vrabel, then they should hire Ben Johnson as the offensive coordinator and pay him what they paid Josh McDaniels. I don’t want to see another Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator; we’ve been there and done that. We need someone like Mike McDaniel, and Ben Johnson would be a perfect fit.
I believe Mayo deserves time to grow as a head coach. He will eventually get another opportunity, but he never even called a defense before. Should they have given him another chance? Yes, but I understand why the Krafts didn’t; it was affecting their business negatively, which ultimately led to Mayo’s swift dismissal.e never even called a defense before.
