As Moving Day approached, there were big names we expected to see who, unexpectedly, didn’t have Saturday tee times. Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Justin Thomas and John Rahm all missed the cut.
Coming into the day, The Open had a bunched up leaderboard with Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner tied at -6. But lurking were the likes of Rory McIlroy (-4), Jordan Spieth (-3) and Rickie Fowler (-3).
Today brought low scores and big names into play. Defending champion, Jordan Spieth shot a 65 and finished the day as the co-leader. He’s tied with, little known, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner.
Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Tommy Fleetwood are all lurking four shots off at 5-under.
But Spieth is definitely the story. The defending champion had struggled with his putting but it looks like he’s had it corrected and is, once again, in control on a major tournament.
The big question for Woods an McIlroy is whether they can get off to a hot start and avoid making a mistake on the way in. For Woods, that happened on the Par 3, 16th that resulted in a bogey. McIlroy was +2 over his last three holes.
With twelve golfers within four strokes, Sunday will be about more than just shot making. It will also be about who can keep their nerves in check. For those not in the last group, putting up a solid number and getting into the clubhouse is key. With 16,17, & 18 playing tough, even players in the clubhouse two or three shots back could have a chance to force a playoff or win outright.
