These are the Nuts And Bolts College Football Players Of The Week. In week number nine we had some shocking performances. We saw a few team and conference records set. We saw backups announce themselves and some stars back from injury-dominated.
NAIA Players Of The Week Offense: QB Northwestern College (Iowa) Tyson Kooima, only needed 13 pass attempts, since he connected on all of them for 283 yards and 6 TDs, with a long pass and run of 83 yards. This was more impressive considering this was his first game back from an Achilles tear in the playoffs last season, also he had 13 carries for 44 yards.
NAIA Player Of The Week Defense: DE Sage DeLong of Eastern Oregon had 11 total tackles nine of them solo, seven tackles for loss, ( a program record) 6 Sacks (a program record) 1 pass breakups, he was a high school 195-pound state wrestling champion who was at one point a TE recruit, but he’s thrived as a DE. At 6’4 1/2″ 263 he doesn’t look like an NAIA player.
Division III Offense: QB Gavin Zimbelman, Sr., Aurora, IL He scored eight of the nine touchdowns in Aurora’s 63-41 victory over the Eagles of Benedictine. He clocked out of a full day’s work with 432 yards on 31-of-43 passing, seven touchdowns, a 72.1 completion percentage, and a passing efficiency of 210.2. He also added 19 yards and a touchdown rushing.
Division III Player Of The Week Defense: Endicott DE Colin Meropoulos set a school record with 4.5 sacks in the game, setting the single-season record with 11.5 sacks in a season. Meropoulos totaled eight tackles (five solo, three assisted) with 4.5 tackles for a loss totaling 34 yards. His final sack came on the last play of the game, a 16-yarder sealing the win for the Gulls.
Division II Player Of The Week Offense: Mars Hill tight end Ty Snelson had a big day. The senior from Hot Springs, N.C. had four catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns, for an average of 30.3 yards per catch. Snelson currently leads the South Atlantic Conference in touchdown receptions with nine. He’s a “move” tight end whose dangerous after the catch.
Division II Player Of The Week Defense: New Mexico Highlands CB Lebarrion Jones had seven tackles and all of his tackles were solos, he had: a tackle for loss, two interceptions, and a pair of pass breakups. The Mobile AL, native has excelled since his arrival from Mississippi Delta Community College.
FCS Player Of The Week Offense: QB Cole Johnson James Madison University, he was 22 of 25 for 307 yards, six TDs and a long completion of 58 yards, four carries for 14 yards, and a long of 10 yards, he was tremendously poised and efficient.
FCS Player Of The Week Defense: LB, Garrett Sayegh of Charleston Southern had a performance that would have been impressive if it had taken two games to compile. He tallied 11 solo stops, five assists, a TFL, two forced fumbles, an interception, and a pass break up.
FBS Player Of The Week Offense: Miami [FL] QB, Tyler Van Dyke was 32 out of 42 for 426 yards, with TDs and an interception, with a long completion of 57 yards and four rushes for -19 and a long of seven.
FBS Player Of The Week Defense: Middle Tennessee LB DQ Thomas had 8 solo tackles, two assists, two tackles for loss, an interception returned for a 43 yard TD and four QB hurries. He’s a linebacker/safety hybrid with terrifically fluid movement and agility.
