Last night the 67th annual Grammy awards show was one of the best we have seen in a long time. With the Los Angeles community still coming to grips with horrific wildfires, the show saluted the city and first responders. Winners used the moment to speak up and out on issues near their hearts and did it with class and grace. And if it hasn’t happened already someone needs to do a wellness check on my guy Drake, who had to watch Kendrick Lamar walk away with an arm full of awards. For old-school viewers of the show, this was a classic one with great performances and those iconic duo’s you only see at the Grammys. Music’s biggest night didn’t let fans down.

WINNER: Cowboy Carter by Beyoncé
After 25 years of being in the music business and making some great albums FINALLY Beyoncé took home an album of the year award. You could see how much it meant to her during her speech and her post-show interviews. “I just feel very full and very honored,” she added. Beyoncé is the most awarded artist in Grammys history, with 35 trophies. You can feel how you want about Cowboy Carter and whether is it a “true country” album or not but you can not deny that with the album she did 3 things. She opened the doors of the genre to a new group of fans, continued to shatter stereotypes, and brought black country artists to the front of the line for new fans to get to know.
Never one to keep her fans waiting she announced a tour as well which I am sure as I type is sold out. Kendrick Lamar was the other big winner walking with 5 awards and letting others in the rap world know he is “HIM” and the Super Bowl is his next stop. I am a huge Rapsody fan and to see her get a win was great as her last album was slept on but the Grammy committee knew what time it was. It was a very nice touch and deserved to see firefighters from L.A. be on stage get the gratitude they deserve and be the ones to give the Queen Bee her award. I also enjoyed the Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga performance of an iconic song about a place so many know and love. Also the performance of “I Love L.A.” was very well done and set the tone for the show.
The tribute to the late great Quincy Jones was well done and had a very nice mix of artists young and old. Janelle Monáe is in my opinion still one of the most slept-on artists of our time she is GOOD! And of course as a fan of Latin music seeing Shakira on her 48th birthday win and also give a good performance was very cool.
Overall I think this was one of the better shows we have had in the last few years. It was a good mix of showing California love in its time of need, as well as showcasing some new emerging talent like Doechii who became the 3rd female to win the best rap album category. I need to Reevaluate my level of petty after seeing Kendrick rocking a “Canadian Tuxedo” all night long. I don’t know about you but the commercial for the new Lady Gaga album had me grooving could she be in for a huge 2025? Until next time play it LOUD.
