Few events create as much buzz as the Oscars where the best films of the year are recognized and awarded. From the actors in front of the camera to the set designs, music, and wardrobe this is the event for real movie buffs. With the recent devastating wildfires in California, this is a chance to not only showcase the resolve of the people who live there but also help raise money for charities helping rebuild. The 97th edition will be hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. He will be a perfect fit and I expect him to smash it. Also, a whole new group of fans who don’t know a lot about him.
How Does It Work?
Academy members from each of the 19 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film, International Feature Film, and Live Action Short Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of members from all branches who opt-in to participate. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. Members submitted ballots from 93 countries. The process is intense but with so many films it is very necessary. A total of 23 categories are up for grabs with, the top 5 being Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.
Some fun facts the all-time leader in nominations is Walt Disney with 59, and the leader for actors is Meryl Streep with 21. This year Emilia Pérez has the most with 13 the most ever by a non-English speaking film. How many awards it takes home is one of many things to keep an eye on throughout the evening.
