What Does The Super Bowl Mean To You?

The writers of NBS share what the BIG Game means to them…

I love devoting every Sunday to football. I clear out my entire schedule and make sure that I have nothing to do, while simultaneously telling others, “Sorry, I’m busy. Football is on.” Shockingly, not everyone thinks that way. But on Super Bowl Sunday, they certainly do.

The Super Bowl is the grand culmination of football season, the season we love when it’s around and we hate to see go. Gone is fantasy football, rooting on our favorite teams, and following the rest of the league’s storylines. So it’s only fitting that we end it with one big party, filled with food, beer, and, of course, football.

I am hoping after this Super Bowl, it is an event that will bring good memories for Panthers fans rather than bad ones. After this season, I hope to be able to say the Panthers finally brought back a Super Bowl trophy to the Queen City instead of saying they appeared in Super Bowl XXXVIII only to be beat by Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri in the closing seconds..

The Super Bowl to me means an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the greatness that is sports. Not just on a United States level, but the passion involved in them is something any fan from any part of the world can relate to. The Super Bowl, being our biggest sporting event of the year, is the perfect opportunity for people from all over the world, including those in the United States, to witness some of the greatest moments that bring us all together.

I recently read “When it was just a game”, a book about the first Super Bowl. I enjoyed it because the Packers were a dynasty back then and there wasn’t excess media hoopla (the game didn’t even sell out). Now there’s so much hub-ub about the Big Game that it cloys on even the biggest football fan. In fact the NFL as a whole has become a behemoth that, as pointed out in the concussion movie, owns a day of the week (one that used to be held sacred). Don’t get me wrong I watch and will continue to watch the Super Bowl and NFL football. But I watch it with a touch of sadness and disappointment given that my favorite game has a pro league that has grown too big for its britches.
