Apple might have been late to the party when it comes to streaming content. With a fairly smaller library, it might be harder to find the shows interesting enough to take a chance on. They don’t have comfort shows such as The Office or Friends, but they do have a unique library of shows that give the streamer life. Ted Lasso is obviously their biggest hit so far. However, if you’re looking for a show to replace it while they decide whether or not they can make season 4 work, try Shrinking instead:
If you loved Ted Lasso, this is the first place to start for a show to replace it. Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein (better known as Roy Kent) co-created this Apple TV+ gem with all the same charm and heart as Ted Lasso. Rather than a carbon copy, Shrinking tackles just as many of life’s challenges with charm and wholesomeness. The trio has comedy down as noted by Bill Lawrence’s work on Scrubs, Jason Segel’s Marshall on How I Met Your Mother, and Brett Goldstein’s Roy Kent.
Shrinking has a good mix of recognizable faces as well as young talent, each who portray relatable characters. You’ll see the Star Wars/Indiana Jones legend Harrison Ford, Christa Miller from the aforementioned Scrubs, and Ted McGinley from Happy Days/Married…With Children.
Yet, it’s the younger actors who can bring out the heart and soul of the show. Lukita Maxwell shines as Alice and brings out some emotional moments of the show’s plot. You can’t help but root for Luke Tennie’s character Sean. Former correspondent of The Daily Show, Jessica Williams, has great chemistry with each of the characters she shares a screen with.
It’s the perfect ensemble cast that plays so well off of each other that each character fits their role so well. The ability to bounce dialogue off of each other sets up the show’s funnier moments while still keeping the focus on their struggles.
Yes, it is hard to replace a loveable show such as Ted Lasso that hits you in all the right feels. However, Apple TV+ and the willingness to lean into light-hearted yet relatable comedies can fill a small portion of that void until they eventually announce season 4 of Ted Lasso. Let Shrinking be one of those shows.
