Brett Favre was not the only guy who led the Green Bay Packers to Super Bowl glory…There was also this fellow nicknamed The Minister of Defense, Reggie White.
The upcoming Super Bowl brought back memories of Reggie White’s unstoppable performance in Super Bowl XXXI in which he collected three sacks in the Green Bay Packers’ 35-21 win over, drumroll please…
The New England Patriots!
After his college football career for the University of Tennessee was over, Reggie could not pass up the opportunity to play pro football in the same state where he went to college and he decided to sign with the since defunct USFL Showboats in Memphis.
Bad decision-making on the part of the USFL higher-ups let to their demise and Reggie went on to the NFL, where he became one of the most awarded players in the history of the National Football League.
Frankly we at Eagles Nation didn’t know much about the guy at the beginning, that is until!
His debut with the Philadelphia Eagles versus the New York Giants in 1985.
Reggie came off the bench recorded 2.5 sacks and deflected a pass which was returned for a touchdown.
It was as if the New York Giants owed him money!
He started every game for the Philadelphia Eagles after that!
Reggie was an ordained minister with a great sense of humor. At times coaches will get frustrated with him because he was always goofing around on the practice field.
There are two things which always stuck with me about the Minister of Defense:
-
His spot on Muhammad Ali impressions and…
-
The fact that he was the only guy in that locker room that could always make Jerome Brown smile!
You being thought about, Reginald…They don’t make ’em like you anymore, Big Guy.
