Emmitt Smith is worrying about the wrong thing these days. As a true Dallas Cowboy for life, Smith is taking his dislike for the Philadelphia Eagles a bit too far. Just this week alone, Smith is criticizing the Eagles and their fan base for having their chest poked out. For many, this is a rivalry where trash-talking is the norm, but it boils down to the embarrassment the Cowboys have caused their former and current players.
The Cowboys have labeled themselves as the staple of the NFL. They have won Super Bowls, but their last one was over 30 years ago. And to add more salt to the wound, they haven’t come close to even reaching an NFC Championship since the days of Smith. Yes, fans can understand his frustration, but the part that has me ruffled is his inability to give the Eagles the credit they deserve.
In Smith’s eyes, he says the Eagles are boasting about winning 2 Super Bowls in the last 20 years. Not so, the Philadelphia Eagles have played in 3 Super Bowls and won 2 in the last 8 years. Please put some respect on their name. By saying the last 20, he diminishes what they have accomplished in a short period. That’s like taking away what his Cowboys accomplished during his time and saying they won 3 Super Bowls in 20 years as well.
The Cowboys vs the Eagles is an intense rivalry but Smith is just butt hurt that his former team has not reached the mountain top since he left. The Eagles, on the other hand, have taken the throne as not only the best team in the NFC East, but the top dawgs in the NFC entirely. And that right there has to hurt Smith more than anything.
“I’m sick of it…We have allowed others to come and nitpick at the star and make fun of the star and that’s what happens…now all of a sudden over the last 20 years they win two Super Bowls and they think they’re the best thing on the doggone planet, and everywhere I go I hear, ‘Go Birds.’ I’m sick of hearing, ‘Go Birds.’ I’m always asking where are you going? You still got a long way to go to get to us.”
What he’s looking at in the Eagles is what he had with the Cowboys. A stable QB, talented receivers, a defense that caused havoc, and a running back that can change everything. He hates it. And truth be told, he should. This is the Eagles’ moment to throw sand in their rivals’ faces. The Cowboys did it decades ago when they were running things, now there’s a new sheriff in town.
Emmitt Smith said he hates hearing “Go Brids”. Well, tell your former team to shut them up, and you won’t have to hear it. That right there is the problem. The past and current Cowboys have been so worried about speaking to the media instead of focusing on what’s happening on the field. Go tell Jerry Jones to get the stick out his ass and sign some quality players.
Smith can voice his opinion, but what I won’t allow him to do is downplay with the Philadelphia Eagles have accomplished in the last decade. In his era, the Cowboys ruled the gridiron. But those days are in the rearview mirror. However, like any normal Cowboys fan, he’s still living in the past.
