As the league season starts to ramp up, more and more people wonder who will be the next MVP. With this, many theories and conjectures appear in a lot of articles on different websites. First, people calculate individual player stats. Then, many people will be betting on their guesses as to who will be the next MVP.
But if you’re not that knowledgeable on how the MVP will be decided, as the most critical factor in choosing the MVP or who’s the current favorite, it will be hard for you to make an educated guess. Arguably, football is much tougher on their MVP decision. Everyone knows that the league weighs the offense more than the defense. However, a defensive player can still win the MVP.
If you think it’s about the tackles and interceptions, then you’re wrong. They rarely have an impact on the decision. If you believe it’s not very easy, then you’re right about that. Even then, many people are having fun guessing who will be the MVP as the season is coming to a close. Before we tell you our candidates who are most likely to have the MVP award, let’s first tackle how the MVP awarding works.
How does the league decide the MVP?
As far as any award goes in the NFL, nothing gives more honor than winning the MVP award. Even though MVP betting is popular and only intensifies as the season goes, admittedly, only a small group of people knows how the MVP system works.
Even though we mentioned that it’s more complicated than how the other sports do it, it’s straightforward to understand its gist. However, this doesn’t mean that the system is flawless. There have been some controversies over the years regarding the MVP award.
So how does it work?
Unlike other leagues that cast a vote for multiple players based on how they rank them, the NFL cast a single vote at the end of each season. Of course, this puts a lot of weight on their choices, but it also has some downsides. The Associated Press chooses 50 voters, and only they hold the authority to select who the MVP will be. Typically, the voters are chosen from football enthusiasts, former football superstars, sports news channels, etc.
If you think that the MVP award is mostly biased to quarterbacks, well, then, yes, but actually no. Admittedly, the MVP award is mainly skewed towards quarterbacks, and for a reason, of course. The quarterback is the facilitator of the offense. He is the only one who touches the ball every play (outside of the center).
The fact that the quarterbacks are the face of a team, which means that he takes most of either the credit or the blame, further strengthens the argument. If you see a quarterback’s name in most of the sports news channels most often, then expect him to have a chance of being the season’s quarterback.
Here are our candidates that are most likely to win the MVP award this year.
Patrick Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes is on fire this season, with 31 touchdown passes and two interceptions. Not only that, but he also currently has a 113.8 passer rating for the season overall. The Chiefs are 11-1 with seven consecutive wins and an average of 31.6 points per game during that winning streak. If Mahomes keeps this up, he will be on his way to a new single-season record of touchdown to interception ratio.
Aaron Rodgers
Green Bay is putting up more heat recently with their all-out performance, thanks to Aaron Rodgers. They are also currently on the pace to have a historic season scoring and racking up total yards per game.
Recently, Rodgers became the fourth player to achieve a touchdown to interception ratio of more than 12 since 1948. The last time he did the said feat, he was labeled the best player and won MVP back in 2011. So it’s not a surprise if he gets it again this year.
Russell Wilson
This Super Bowl quarterback was once the Vegas favorite. That was when Wilson threw nine passing touchdowns over two games. Since then, Russell has regressed to the mean. Still, his performance remains outstanding. He is completing 70% of his passes, and Seattle averages 29.3 points per game. Currently, Wilson is in the running as a decent bet in terms of winning the MVP award.
Takeaway
The 2020 NFL season is coming to an end, and after that, the Super Bowl. As the games intensify and the feats start to pile up, it can be hard to pick who will win this season’s MVP. When the Super Bowl comes back around, it’ll even be more exciting and intense. However, all of the players mentioned above are safe bets right now, but you should still keep your eyes peeled as to which of them you should bet on.
