By Billy Lewis:
On August 12th the New York Yankees took on the Chicago White Sox in the inaugural “Field of Dreams” game. Major League Baseball actually stepped up and put up a tremendous show. It was also partnered with a great game and has become one of the biggest highlights of the 2021 season.
The Yankees took the lead in the third inning with an Aaron Judge three-run home run. In the bottom half of that inning, the White Sox took back the lead and held on to a 7-4 lead into the ninth inning. Then in the top of the ninth, the Bronx Bombers fought back. Judge hit his second home run of the night, cutting the Sox lead to 7-6. Two batters later Giancarlo Stanton hit a huge two-run homer into the corn to give the Bombers an 8-7 lead.
Zack Britton came on in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game. Unfortunately, for the Yankees, though fortunately for Major League Baseball, there was a Hollywood ending. Tim Anderson delivered a walk-off two-run home run into the Iowa night.
New York Yankees Rolling
The Yankees would recover to win the next two games against the White Sox, both of those at Guaranteed Rate Field. In fact, the Yankees’ last loss was that “Field of Dreams” game. Since then they have gone on a nine-game winning streak.
Most importantly after the White Sox series, the Bombers welcomed in the Red Sox for a two-day, three-game series in the Bronx. Naturally, the Yankees swept that series against the Red Sox and in turn, took over the top spot in the American League Wild Card Standings.
The Yankees have since beat the Angels in a rain makeup, and then took a three-game series against the Twins. Originally, the Yankees and Twins were scheduled for a four-game weekend series. However, with the impending weather connected to Hurricane Henri, Sunday’s matinee was postponed until September. [pickup_prop id=”3190″]
Will Yankees Roll Continue
Next up for the Bombers is a trip down to Atlanta for a two-game set against the red hot Braves. Both the Yankees and Braves are 9-1 in their last ten games, using that stretch to shoot up the standings. After the brief stop in Atlanta, the Bombers will head out for the West Coast.
Their first series will be crucial to the wild card standings as they will take on the A’s for four. The Bombers will continue their playoff push and are now playing their best baseball of the season.
Though it will be tough to catch the Rays for the American League East, the Yankees have finally put themselves in prime playoff position. While their red hot play may not continue, we are finally seeing the 2021 Yankees we thought we would when the season started.
