After an up and down first four months of the season, the New York Yankees made a couple of big moves before the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. The first of the trades was almost an expected one. The Yankees acquired outfielder Joey Gallo and pitcher Joely Rodriguez.
The Yankees have been rumored to Gallo for a while, and as a left-handed bat, made sense to help balance out the lineup. The second big move by Brian Cashman was a surprising one. Cashman pounced on the Chicago Cubs firesale and was able to trade for star first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
The Yankees were in Miami over the weekend so Gallo and Rizzo were introduced to the Yankees in their road grays. Rizzo made himself right at home with this Yankee team. Friday night, in the first game for Rizzo and Gallo, the Yanks and Marlins were tied 0-0 going into the sixth inning. Rizzo welcomed himself to Yankee fans by hitting a near 450 foot home run to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.[pickup_prop id=”10041″]
The Bombers would win Friday night 3-1. Saturday evening Rizzo added another home run, as the Yankees won 4-2. Sunday afternoon the Bombers were being dominated by Miami starter, Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara had 10 strikeouts through seven innings, limiting the Yankees to only two hits. One of those hits was a booming double by Gallo.
The Yankees were able to get to the Marlins’ bullpen, as Rizzo ripped an opposite-field RBI single to get the Bombers on the board. After looking lifeless for seven innings, the Bombers came back to win, with Rodriguez picking up his first Yankee win.
Bronx Homecoming
The Bronx faithful will be able to cheer on the Yankees’ new acquisitions Monday as they return home to host the Orioles. Monday we will get to see the final Yankee trade deadline acquisition. After the Gallo and Rizzo trades, Cashman acquired Andrew Heaney from the Los Angeles Angels. Heaney will start tonight against Baltimore.
The Yankees enter Monday seven games back in the AL East, but only 2.5 back for the second wild-card spot. The calendar has turned to August and the Bombers are in a full playoff push.
