The New York Yankees are getting set to host the New York Mets in part one of the 2021 Subway Series. Both teams enter the series with 41 wins as the Yankees sit at 41-39, while the Mets are 41-36. However, the season has a much different feel for each team.
The Yankees’ first three months would be looked at as a failure. They were expected to run through the American League and play for the World Series. Winning the AL East was supposed to be a formality for the 2021 Yankees. However, as it currently stands the Yankees are in fourth place, nine games behind the Boston Red Sox!
The Mets have had a successful first three months. Entering this weekend series, they are in first place in the NL East, two games ahead of the Washington Nationals. The Mets have had their fair share of injuries, and have relied on their starting pitching to lead the way.
New York Yankees Weekend Ahead
The Yankees do luck out heading into the Subway Series. Jacob deGrom pitched Thursday night, so the Yankees will miss baseball’s best pitcher. That being said the Yankees will have Gerrit Cole Saturday, the pitching matchups should be:
Friday: Jordan Montgomery vs. Taijuan Walker
Saturday: Gerrit Cole vs. Marcus Stroman
Sunday: TBD vs. Tylor Megill
Both teams have been offensively challenged this season. The Mets have scored the fewest runs to date this year, while the Yankees have scored the eighth fewest. Though Walker and Stroman are having great seasons, the Yankees have to capitalize missing deGrom.
The Yankees are coming off one of the worst losses of the season. Wednesday night, they started the game scoring seven runs in the first inning against Shohei Ohtani and the Angels. The Bombers and Halos sat through two rain delays, and the Yankees began the ninth inning up 8-4.
Aroldis Chapman had an awful inning, capped by a Jared Walsh grand slam. After scoring seven in the first inning, the Yankees gave up seven in the ninth and lost the game 11-8.
The Subway Series is always fun for the fans, this year the Yankees will need it to be a catalyst for a season turnaround
