The New York Yankees were supposed to be flirting with history as the season enters its last month. They were on a historic pace in the first half of the season, looking to challenge the 2001 Seattle Mariners record of 116 wins. They were slowed slightly in July, finishing the month at 13-13.
August was a whole new animal for the Bombers. Nobody is happier to see the calendar turn to September than those in the Yankee locker room. They finished the month at 10-18, their worst month since September of 1991 when they finished 9-19.
Yankees finish August 10-18 (.357).
Thats their worst record and most losses in any calendar month since September 1991 (9-19, .321).

The 1991 Yankees were in a much different boat. The 2022 Yankees are expected to compete for a World Series Championship, while the 1991 Yankees finished with a 71-91 record.
New York Yankees West Coast Trip Not Good Enough
The Yankees finished the month with what appeared to be a soft spot in the schedule playing the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels. They started with four games in Oakland followed by three in Los Angeles. While the trip started promising, with a Yankees 13-4 win over the A’s.
After squeaking by with a 3-2 win in game two, the Yankees went on to lose the next two. The A’s are a last-place team and splitting with them is inexcusable. It was followed up by losing two of three to the Angels. Going into the seven-game stretch, 5-2 felt like the minimum the Bombers should have gone in order to right the ship. Instead, they laid an egg out west and finished 3-4.
The best thing to come out of the west coast swing for the Yankees was Aaron Judge continuing his MVP season. With his sights set on 61 home runs, Judge crossed the 50 home run threshold. He’ll come back east with 51 home runs on the season.

Still Time For New York Yankees To Rebound
Despite an awful August, the Yankees are still in a good Postseason position. They are able to ride the coattails of their first half and still sit in first place in the AL East. Though what was once a huge lead, is now down to six games over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees are welcomed back to the east coast by those Rays. The Bombers wrap up their ten-game road trip with three against Tampa. With 31 games left to play the Yankees can still correct course and make August a laughable footnote when the story of the 2022 Yankees is said and done. However, the Bombers will have to get back on track to keep their division lead safe.
