The New York Yankees had a great come-from-behind win against the New York Mets Tuesday night. Giancarlo Stanton got the ball rolling in the first inning hitting a long solo home run off of Max Scherzer. Luis Severino was putrid and let the Mets put up 5 runs in the first three innings.
The Yankees entered the 4th inning down 5-1 but stormed all the way back. DJ LeMahieu got the ball rolling hitting a two-run homer off Scherzer. The Yankees then used an RBI double from Anthony Volpe and a two-run bloop single from Jake Bauers to take a 6-5 lead.
Severino had new life, and now a chance for a win with a 6-5 lead. Aaron Boone let Severino try to close out the 5th, but after a two-out RBI single from Luis Guillorme, Sevy was pulled as the game was tied again 6-6. The Yankees bullpen came in and didn’t allow another run.
Josh Donaldson gave the Yankees back the lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Though the Mets had chances to tie the game, the bullpen closed the door and the Yankees walked away with a 7-6 win.
New York Yankees Turn to Gerrit Cole
Wednesday’s night finale will see Yankees ace Gerrit Cole against the Mets’ Justin Verlander. Cole has been exceptional this season for the Yankees Though he has slowed a bit and hasn’t finished 7 innings since his complete game shutout against the Twins on April 16. Hopefully, tonight Cole can pitch deep into the game and give the bullpen some rest.
Verlander on the other hand is still trying to find his groove. Verlander missed April with an injury, and since returning has seemed to alternate good starts with bad starts. His last start was against the Braves and he was awful, giving up 5 runs in only 3 innings.
That could be bad news for the Yankees, but they had hits from struggling players like Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, Volpe, and LeMaheiu so hopefully, that will carry over. We could be in for a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel with Cole and Verlander tonight.
