The New York Yankees are on their way back to the East Coast after playing three series on the West Coast. They played nine games between the Athletics, Dodgers, and Mariners.
The first three games in Oakland did not go according to plan. Oakland has been a house of horrors in the past and this year was no different. Three games in Oakland resulted in three losses for the Yankees.
World Series Preview?
After Oakland, the Yankees shifted to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers. As we enter September, the Dodgers are considered heavy favorites to return to the World Series. The American League is presumed to be represented by one of the Houston Astros or Yankees.
James Paxton opposed Hyun-Jin Ryu Friday night. Paxton delivered his best start as a Yankee, going 6.2 with 11 strikeouts, no walks, and only allowed two runs. Ryu, on the other hand, did not fare as well. The Yankees were able to score seven runs against Ryu, highlighted by Didi Gregorius’ grand slam. Paxton and Gregorius led the way to a Yankees, 10-2 win.
Saturday afternoon the Yankees dropped a nailbiter 2-1. It was not without controversy, however, as it appeared Gleyber Torres scored the tying run in the ninth. The umpires somehow granted the Dodgers time out midplay, and the Yankees would go on to lose the game.
The Yankees wrapped up the series against Clayton Kershaw on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. DJ LeMahieu got the Bombers on the board early with a leadoff home run. Domingo German appropriately got the ball for the Yankees. After a first-inning home run, German settled down and gave the Yankees six strong innings. The Bombers won the game 5-1 as German got his Major League-leading 17th win.
Finishing Strong
The Yankees finished up their 2019 (regular season) West Coast swing in Seattle. Some may have been concerned with a letdown series, but the Yankees answered those concerns with a series sweep. Mike Ford was the hero of the first game, as he hit two home runs and drove in three runs as the Yankees won 5-4.
New York won the second game 7-0 before winning the finale 7-3 to complete the three-game sweep. The Yankees are returning home for their second to last homestand of 2019. They’ll look to get their revenge on the Athletics over the weekend, before hosting the Rangers beginning Labor Day.
