The Major League Baseball season is gearing up to begin its regular season Thursday when the New York Yankees take on the Washington Nationals. Of course, this year is going to be a far different baseball season than we are used to. Though baseball is typically a marathon of a season, with 162 games in a season, this year we will see a 60 game sprint.
The Yankees are expected to be one of the best teams in baseball, and with that, they have quite a few MVP candidates in their lineup. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres, and DJ LeMahieu are all good bets to find themselves in MVP running. One another name who has a real chance to find his name on top of that list is Gary Sanchez.
Gary Sanchez’s best 60 game stretch, was when he first came up and took baseball by storm. To end the 2016 season Sanchez played in 53 games, hitting 20 home runs and driving in 42 runs. There was a feel Sanchez would hit a home run every night and Sanchez didn’t disappoint.
Sanchez’s Healthy Potential
Since then, Sanchez has had some injuries but when he’s fully healthy he still shows that hitting prowess of 2016. Typically the season is a grind, especially for catchers. This year, however, Sanchez should be able to stay fresh. Sanchez should find himself in the lineup 45-50 times in this abbreviated season. If he stays healthy and hits to his potential, there is an excellent chance Sanchez can add an MVP trophy to his resume.
The last Yankee catcher to win MVP was Thurman Munson in 1976. If Sanchez can put up around 12-15 home runs and 30 RBIs, while catching all season, he very well may be able to add his name to the list.
The season begins Thursday!
