The rumors are beginning to spread that the New York Jets will try to pry Davante Adams away from the Las Vegas Raiders in order to pair him back with Aaron Rodgers. In theory, it sounds good but for all parties involved, this should not happen.
Adams and Rodgers left the Green Bay Packers for their own reasons. Adams was the first to go when he could have stayed. His departure without a doubt helped Rodgers make his decision to want to leave as well.
Adams went to Las Vegas where he teamed back up with his former College teammate Derek Carr but that turned sour when the Raiders decided they wanted to go another rough at QB. Well, as we know, that was not the best decision. Both Adams and the Raiders are struggling and because of that, the speculation that he wants to leave has begun. But why the New York Jets?
It’s simple. Rodgers is there. But the Jets must stay away from this deal. For the Raiders, this may be a wise decision. Get rid of someone who may not be happy there. And in return, get some talent and draft picks.
However, for the New York Jets, this makes little sense. while Rodgers is expected to be healed and ready to go, it still begs the question of what’s beyond the 2024 season.
Should The New York Jets Trade For Davante Adams
Rodgers has flirted with retirement before and at the age of 40, how many more productive and non-injury seasons does he have left? Bringing Adams will bolster their receiving corps with him and Garrett Wilson but will it be a one-and-done?
While Adams signed a 5-year contract, he does have an out following the 2024 seaosn. Yes, that adds up nicely for the Jets but does Adams want to be the guy who becomes a team hopper? If Rodgers cannot return to form, will he walk away and in doing so, where does that leave the Jets and Adams?
The real kicker here is that the New York Jets will do whatever needs to be done to not only place a winning team on the field but make Rodgers happy. With Wilson at the helm, the front office has seen more than enough to know that the offense is lacking firepower. Adding Adams will surely change that, but is it worth it?
Pairing Adams with Garrett Wison will be great to see. If Rodgers does come back healthy, this would easily be the best set of receivers he’s ever played with. Adams will come with a chip on his shoulder but how does this affect Wilson? Will he be willing to share the spotlight with Rodgers and Adam?
Most importantly, the New York Jets must be aware of the asking price for Adams. How many picks are they willing to give up? He was moved to the Raiders for a 1st and 2nd. Is this something the Jets can afford to lose knowing that in another season or two, they will need a new starting QB.
For Adams, his wanting out does make sense. He left to reunite with one QB who was traded only to leave for another one who may walk away next season. Adams is too good of a receiver to waste the remaining of his prime years taking passes for Jimmy Garoppolo or Zach Wilson.
