Whether they want to admit it or not, The New Orleans Saints need to find a consistent role for Taysom Hill. Sean Payton is gone which has left Hill in a weird spot. He’s a football player but that’s it. It’s time for them to define exactly who he is.
Since coming into the league in 2017, Hill was seen as a possible replacement. However, Payton had other thoughts. He used the versatile QB to play RB, WR, TE, and QB. And 4 years later, nothing has changed. While he’s a good weapon to have, the truth is, those gimmick plays that we’re working just 2-3 seasons ago, are no longer getting the results they once were. So what’s next?
If Derek Carr decides to call it a career or gets moved after this season, Hill should get a shot to become the starter. No, the ball should not just handed to him, he will need to earn it. He has had some great moments but is he a starter in the league or not? The Saints have receivers so maybe a shot TE? No matter what it is, they must do something with him. If his time on the Saints has run its course, then trade him to a team and a coach who may have a plan.
Hill can’t be used as a full-time RB. While agile, his body is not built for that type of bruising. Being a receiver won’t be too much of a stretch for him but can he hold up there as well? That’s the thing, no one knows. Everyone sees a few plays a season where he does something spectacular, but then he vanishes.
Should The Saints Trade Taysom Hill
This season, Tayson Hill has ran the ball 73 times for 349 yards and 4 TDs. As a receiver, Hill has caught 34 passes for 345 yards and 2 TDS. But as a QB, Hill has completed just 5 passes for 73 yards and 1 TD.
With the New Orleans Saints losing playoff position, Hill’s future should be a hot topic. In 2021, the Saints forked over a new 4-year $40M deal. But he’s only a part-time player. The good and bad news for the New Orleans Saints is that there is a “potential out” after this season. However, that will result in a little over $16M in Dead Cap. Decisions are on deck for the Saints.
Now, with the news that Payton and the Denver Broncos benched Russell Wilson for the final two games of the season, the Broncos could be in the market for a new QB. And considering their history, there is a chance that Payton could have his eye on Taysom Hill. Will Hill work in Denver?
