The New NBS Week 10 College Football Nutties were again hotly contested. Conference and team records were broken or tied, all in an effort, to grasp college football’s most cherished new award. There were upsets, and near upsets, and 140 points were scored in a regulation-length football game. Now by popular demand: The New NBS Week 10 College Football Nutties.
FBS Defense
Pitt, DE, Deslin Alexandre collected seven tackles, three of them solo, two and a half sacks, a pass breakup and his final sack was in the end-zone for a safety that salted away the win for the Panthers.
Honorable Mention
Wisconsin, LB, Nate Herbig had four solo tackles, three of which were behind the line of scrimmage. Of those three TFLs, two were sacks and for good measure, he had a pressure and a pass break-up.
FBS Offense
SMU, QB, Tanner Mordecai set school and conference records with nine touchdown passes, seven of which came in the first half. He passed for 379 yards on 37 attempts, 28 of which were completions. He was responsible for 10 total touchdowns, nine via the air, and also rushed for 54 yards on eight carries and a tenth TD that was a rushing score.
Honorable Mention
In the same game, Clayton Tune assaulted the record-book at a school that had given us Andre Ware, David Klingler, and Case Keenum. Tune is now a member of Houston’s seven-touchdowns-thrown-in-game club with: David Klingler, Jimmy Klinger, and Andre Ware. David Klingler notched seven sixes on three occasions in the 1990 season.
He holds the school’s all-time record of 11, set in 1990. Tune had 527 yards passing on 53 passes, 36 of which were connections, as well as seven of his eight scores. The other touchdown came on one of his 12 carries for 111 yards, including a surprisingly nimble and expeditious 55-yard canter. Amazingly, he came up short, of the win, largely thanks to Nick Roberts’ two picks of him and Tanner Mordecai.
FBS Special Teams
VA Tech, RS/WR, Tucker Holloway was the most explosive Hokie in the game versus Georgia Tech, with a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown. His seven attempts for 188 punt return yards is likely, the most, in a single game, in school history. He surpassed Antonio Freeman’s 164-yard effort versus Pitt in 1994. His 90-yard punt return for a touchdown was the fourth-longest, punt return, score in school history.
FCS Defense
Kennesaw State, CB, Chance Gamble had a career day with eight tackles, seven of them solo, and three interceptions. The sophomore corner tied the Kennesaw State record with three picks in a game with Donte Blackmon’s trio in 2016. He had 128 yards in interception returns. His 89-yard pick-six, on the game’s final play, broke the previous record of 78 yards set by current, fellow Kennesaw State, secondary-mate DB, Markeith Montgomery, earlier this season.
Honorable Mention
North Carolina A&T, LB, Jacob Roberts was the catalyst on defense with 12 tackles, nine solo, three assisted, a tackle-for-loss, one pass break-up, and a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown, which aided the Aggies in claiming a 49-24 win over Norfolk State.
FCS Offense
Stonehill, RB, Jermaine Corbett, ran for a career-high 227 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns as he struck on TD runs of 32, 59 & 74 yards. What makes this more impressive is this is Stonehill’s FCS debut season, last year they were D-II. Corbett has played six of Stonehill’s games and is atop the conference, with an average of 122.5 rushing yards per game. He is the only player in the Conference averaging over 100-yards per game, his eight rushing touchdowns are tied for second in the Conference and his 6.4 yards-per-carry is number one.
Honorable Mentions
Grambling, RB, Maurice Washington was greased lightning, with 201 yards rushing, scoring on runs of 75 yards and 56 yards; he averaged 20.1 yards per rushing attempt on only 10 carries.
North Carolina Central University, QB, Davius Richard passed for 281 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
FCS Special Teams
University of New Hampshire, RB/RS, Dylan Laube, nearly scored a previous ‘Nutty’ after a 92-yard punt return against Towson, this week he breaks through and wins one of The New NBS Week 10 College Football Nutties, after a 100-yard kickoff return. This season, on only three kickoff-returns, he has 145 yards and a score.
Division II Defense
Central State, LB, Chazz Hunter had an impressive eight solo tackles. paired with a stupefying 16 assists, which means that he had a hand in 24 total stops, a sack, another TFL, with a forced fumble.
Seton Hill, Linebacker, Jaylen McDuffie took over the game with13 total tackles eight of which were solo, five total TFLs, of those 4.5 were sacks.
Honorable Mentions
Frostburg State, LB, Dylan Culpen was as omnipresent as the air and inflation as he posted seven tackles (1.5 TFL), two interceptions and a sack.
Xzavier Hines had 3 solo tackles, assisted on five more, as well as a sack, one half of those eight tackles resulted in gains of two yards or less and he had an interception at eight-yard line that prevented a score.
Ferris State, DE, Caleb Murphy gathered six total tackles, with a sack among his 2.5 tackles for loss.
Division II Offense
West Florida, QB, Harrison Frost, was true on 41 of 65 passes tallying 503 passing yards, for four passing TDs and he was effective on the ground. He also scored a rushing TD on nine carries for 32 net yards.
Honorable Mentions
Southwest Baptist, QB, Cooper Callis was a force with which to be reckoned, with 24 completions for 378 yards and four touchdowns. Additionally, he showed his athletic ability by rushing for 106 yards on five carries.
Fort Valley State RB, Emanuel Wilson, was like a rapier piercing the Albany State Rams on 28 carries for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He added three catches for six yards.
Division II Special Teams
Southwestern Oklahoma State, Safety, Ashton Hamby had two TFLs on defense, but his impact was truly felt on special teams as he forced a fumble on a punt return, and later he blocked a punt that Keldric Martin scooped and scored, changing the direction of the game.
