Mookie Betts was on the Boston Red Sox for nine seasons. He was brought up through the minor leagues and really made himself one of the best in the game. His outfield skills really developed over the years and really was a great teammate. His approach at the plate was good too. In six seasons in the major leagues, he finished with 139 home runs and a .301 batting average. An OPS of .893. The Red Sox offered him 10 years at $350 million he came back with 12 years and $420 million. The best the Sox could do was trade Betts and Price. Betts will probably sign long term with the Dodgers when he becomes a free agent next season but he will not be coming back to Boston he didn’t want to resign with them.
Betts has said publicly he loves Boston and the Red Sox but has countered that he’s going to test free agency at the end of the 2020 season. If he wanted to stay in Boston he would’ve signed a multi-year deal with them. LA is perfect for Betts he can grow as a player and also not have to worry about being in the spotlight. The LA media I’m sure isn’t as tough as the Boston media. The biggest team right now in LA has to be the Lakers because of the tragic passing of legend Kobe Bryant. Betts and even Price have an easy ride with the media cause I think most of them overlook the Dodgers.
Betts didn’t have the best postseason numbers in 2018. He only batted .218 in the postseason that year with one home run and four RBI’s. The Dodgers feel like they got screwed on World Series Championships so they are going to need better numbers than that. Honestly, though the Dodgers have just choked when it matters the most. They have the talent to win just can’t seal it in crunch time.
As for Mookie Betts, he’ll make himself known in LA as he did in Boston. I’m sure he’ll have a great season and look to get paid in 2021 cause that’s all he cares about. He’s won a Championship now will have a stellar year then get his money probably from the Dodgers. I’m sure the Dodgers will offer him an extension very early in the season to get it out of the way. It’s probably going to be in the $400 million range cause that’s what Betts wants and for 12 years. If the Dodgers wait till the end of the season they may lose him but he won’t be coming back to Boston.
