The New York Mets finally came home after a 10-game West Coast trip. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor and Starling Marte all missed games because of injuries during their journey out west. The Mets went 5-5 against The Dodgers, Padres, and Angels. The players came home healthier, and it showed on the field. They took 2 out of 3 games from the Milwaukee Brewers and 3 out of 4 games from the Florida Marlins.
New York is in first place, but it has not been easy. Atlanta and Philadelphia have been playing much better as of late.
STANDINGS:
- NY Mets, 45-24.
- ATL Braves, 39-29. Won 8 out of 10 games.
- PHI Phillies, 36-32. Won 7 out of 10 games.
- MIA Marlins, 29-36.
- WSH Nationals, 24-46.
Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor continue to put up big, power numbers. They have 30 home runs and 86 RBIs combined. Jeff McNeil has been the teams MVP so far. He can bat anywhere in the lineup and play numerous positions on the field. He is batting .327 on the year. That is 8th in the National League. This offense is putting up great numbers, despite having 2 huge weaknesses.
METS OFFENSIVE STATS:
- 2nd in runs scored per game, 5.0.
- 3rd in hits per game, 8.8.
- 1st in batting average, .261.
- 1st in On Base Percentage, .334.
If the Mets want to make a deep post-season run, they must upgrade at 3rd base and the catcher position. Third basemen, Eduardo Escobar and Luis Guillorme, have 6 home runs, 35 RBIs combined in 100 games. Catcher’s James McCain, Tomas Nido and Patrick Mazeika have 2 home runs, 19 RBIs combined on the season. That is by far, the worst production out of any group of catcher’s in Major League Baseball.
New York’s pitching staff has been battling all season long despite numerous injuries. They are ranked 10th in Earned Run Average, and they are 2nd averaging 9.53 strikeouts per game. Tylor Megill came off the injured list but after 2 starts, is back on it. Jacob deGrom is finally starting to throw, and it looks like Max Scherzer is going to start next weekend against the Miami Marlins.
Fans and media across the country are starting to realize how good this team is. Mets fans want the team to be super aggressive at the trading deadline. If their pitching staff is healthy, after the all-star break, this team could win it all. That has not happened since 1986.
