The New York Mets enter the Week of May 9th with a 20-10 record, and they are in 1st place in the National League East. The Atlanta Braves are in 2nd place with a 14-16 record.
On Mother’s Day, Pete Alonso homered twice, and Chris Bassitt allowed 1 run in 5 2/3 innings, helping the Mets defeat the Phillies, 6-1. New York became the 1st team in the majors to reach 20 wins on the season.
Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Starling Marte have a combined 15 home runs and 64 runs batting in. Jeff McNeil, Travis Jankowski, and Mark Canha are all hitting over .311.
Mets offense:
- 1st in on-base percentage.
- 7th in runs per game, (4.5).
- 2nd in hits per game, (8.6)
- 3rd in batting average, (.256)
New York has dropped from 2nd in stolen bases to 18th. Manager Buck Showalter needs to continue to be aggressive on the base path and steal bases to create runs.
The pitching staff has been just as good as advertised. Tylor Megill, Bassitt and Max Scherzer all have 4 wins. Closer Edwin Diaz has 6 saves, 21 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.50 in 12 games. He looks sharp early in the season.
Mets Pitchers:
- 3rd in opposing batting average, .208.
- 2nd in strikeouts per 9 innings, (10.04).
- 5th in ERA, 3.24
- 2nd in WHIP (Walks and Hits Per Innings Pitched), 1.06.
News and Notes:
The Mets released Robinson Cano prior to the game. Cano was designated for assignment despite nearly $45 million remaining on his contract. This was the right move to make. Cano was batting .195 on the season.
