Mesut Özil is set to join the Turkish club Fenerbahçe after almost 8 years with Arsenal. Arsenal has come to an agreement with the midfielder to terminate his contract.
The former German International has changed his personal emblem on Twitter to blue and yellow which are the primary colors of the club. Özil has said in a recent interview that he is fit to play and he’s “very excited” to play for the recent Süper Lig champions. Fenerbahçe posted photos of Özil and his family on Twitter all but confirming the transfer. The club captioned the photo saying: “Our club is bringing Mesut Ozil to Istanbul to continue the transfer processes.”
Özil has not played a competitive match for Arsenal since March of 2020. It seemed as though Özil would be a key part of the Arsenal squad again after manager Mikel Arteta replaced Unai Emery in late 2019. However, the creative midfielder didn’t feature for Arsenal at all during project restart and was left off the Premier League and Europa League squads to start this season.
Özil signed for the Gunners in 2013 for a then-club record fee of $58 Million from Real Madrid. He played a very important role under former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger winning an FA Cup in his first season at the club. Özil ended his Arsenal career featuring in 259 games, tallying 44 goals, 77 assists, and winning 6 total trophies for the club.
