Mayweather vs McGregor has disaster written all over it, Boxing needs this farce like a hole in the head…
Reading the above statement at loud to myself – I have to admit…I sounded like a bobble head doll when I made it! I had to obtain confirmation from a reliable source, so I called one of my Growing Up Philly Brothers. The man is a former professional Boxing combatant, so he has skin in the sport.
“Brother! How does this sound?”
And I proceeded to read the above statement.
“Yeap! You sound like you don’t like the flavor of the month at a local DQ…Boxing does need drama like this!”
“Thought, so! Thanks, you keep on keeping on, Brother,”
“I’m on the job…”
I stand corrected. When it comes to sports I like to connect past history to current events in order to form an educated guess to what is waiting for it in the future.
Boxing does need the publicity and drama that the Mayweather vs McGregor fight is going to generate. Stagnancy is no good for The Sweet Science.
Whether is Muhammad Ali in a neck deep legal battle with the United States Supreme Court,
Roberto Duran barking No Mas! – right in the middle of a fight,
Or Buster Douglas knocking the invincibility out Mike Tyson, halfway across the world and then following his epic upset by laying down his very next fight,
Drama is good for Boxing. The reality is that nowadays Boxing Mega-Matches rarely live up to their billing after the fighters are introduced. The prelude to the fight and the post fight publicity is what really is of importance.
Mayweather vs McGregor is not going to be Boxing’s finest hour, but…it’s going to be a great spectacle.
