Not only is Kareem Hunt under NFL investigation for the incident that took place back in February, but it appears that the league is also looking into a second incident involving Hunt that took place during the offseason.
The details of the February incident are well-known, but now according to TMZ, the second incident took place at a resort in Put-in-Bay, Ohio. In the early morning hours of June 3, Hunt got into a verbal altercation with another guest that allegedly ended with Hunt punching the man in the face. Since the man wasn’t seriously injured and since he chose not to press any charges, the incident basically went unnoticed during the NFL offseason also.
Here lies the problem one media outlet uncovers damaging video evidence and another gives him a platform to excuse himself, so he can normalize the incident.
That’s a big problem since it’s going to be hard for Hunt to argue that the February incident was a one-time lapse in judgement if he went out and punched a guy in the face just four months later.
Teams were free to claim Hunt on waivers, but since none them did then Hunt became a free agent. However, even if he lands with another team, he won’t be allowed to play until the NFL hands out his final punishment.
NFL really needs to revise its Commissioner Exempt List rules and procedures. It was designed in the early days to keep players in serious off-field trouble away from the field and the headlines, but it has fail miserably.
“First and foremost effective immediately these would be the rule changes the Commissioner Exempt List has to make:
1. Everything needs to be frozen in place. The player can’t be released or, at a minimum, the player can’t be claimed on waivers in the immediate aftermath of a release…
2. The player must not grant any interviews – he’s on paid suspension anyway, so is not hard up for money, unless…
3. The alleged victims do an interview First! Then all bets are off and the player has to respond to the allegations, but never under any circumstance doing an interview first.
