The offensive line is so weak that Jacoby Brissett has to start the season. Roster cutdown day was on Tuesday at 4 p.m., and backup Bailey Zappe was cut. Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal reported that the Patriots didn’t like how he carried himself and that he won’t be with the team.
The Zappe Fever fans were unrealistic to think he would be an NFL quarterback. They were misled by the belief that Bill Belichick knew what he was doing by letting Patricia and Judge run the offense and embarrass Mac Jones on national TV. Now, Mac Jones is about to secure the backup job in Jacksonville while Zappe is jobless. Can the Zappe Fever fans handle it?
The Patriots Cut Their Roster Today Jacoby Looks Like To Be QB1
The Patriots cut Chad Ryland, their highest draft pick for a special teams player under Bill Belichick. Belichick chose to draft Ryland and trade up for him in the 2023 NFL Draft instead of selecting an offensive tackle or wide receiver to help Mac Jones. Now, Mac Jones has earned the backup job in Jacksonville while Zappe is left without one. It seems that Bill Belichick’s ego got in the way.
Atonio Mafi, a 2023 draft pick for the offensive line, was also cut by the Patriots. Jerod Mayo mentioned that they would target some offensive linemen on the waiver wire after Tuesday’s cutdown.
Mayo said, “The starting guard or the starting tackle may not be on the team today.”
The offensive line issues trace back to Bill Belichick whether people want to acknowledge it or not. He had final say in drafting Isaiah Wynn, Antonio Mafi, and Cole Strange. Then, trading up for a kicker in the 2023 draft only to have him cut a year later. Some people fail to recognize that Belichick focused solely on drafting defense and special teams and neglected the offensive side of the ball post Tom Brady.
Jacoby Brissett Will Start The Season Because The Patriots Are Protecting Drake Maye
The Patriots don’t want to repeat what happened to Mac Jones with Drake Maye. That’s another reason why Jacoby Brissett will start the season. However, Alex Van Pelt will never be a flight risk for a head coaching job, so he will always be the offensive coordinator. Did it look like Drake impressed during the preseason? Didn’t it resemble 2021 Mac Jones? And what happened after 2021 with Josh McDaniels?
Indeed, Bill Belichick put his buddies in to coach the offense and mentally destroyed Mac Jones. I’ll continue saying it until people grasp that Patricia, Judge, and Belichick ruined Mac Jones, period. Even his former teammates have spoken about what happened to Mac due to what was around him.
This is something that should never happen to Drake Maye. If he starts in 2025 and experiences the second-year leap, my conclusion will be that after the Cam Newton year, the Patriots should’ve replaced Belichick and started with Jerod, drafting Mac Jones in 2021. Then, you wouldn’t be where you are now. They are essentially four years behind, whether people want to believe it or not.
The Patriots kept all of their draft picks from the current draft for the first time since 1997. They have cut players from the 2022-2023 NFL draft. In other words, it seems like they want to develop Drake Maye in the right way, suggesting that they may feel Bill Belichick did not develop Mac Jones correctly. Although they won’t admit this publicly, it seems to be what they’re thinking behind the scenes.
