Red Sox Got Their Power Hitter
The Boston Red Sox finally got the power hitter they’ve been looking for. J.D. Martinez got singed on Monday night on a five year $110 million dollar contract. Last season he was with the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks. He hit for .303/.376/.690 with 45 home runs and 104 RBI’S. According to FanGraphs they rank Martinez as the 13th best outfielder in baseball since 2014.
Hanley Ramirez spoke yesterday about the Martinez move saying. “It’s pretty good, It’s a good bat and at least 40 homers. And we’re trying to win this (expletive). We’re just gonna get better and win it. It don’t matter. It’s not about us. It’s about the team, the Red Sox. It don’t matter. We just want to win.” David Price spoke about talking to Martinez about coming to the Red Sox. According to USA Today Price told Martinez “It’s tough here, There’s just so much more negativity.” Maybe because you are making $31 million dollars a year Price and have done nothing but complain since you’ve been here.
Price also told Martinez he will be booed in Boston. Martinez will probably be the DH in the lineup for the Red Sox. A few other players spoke about getting Martinez. Jackie Bradley said “Having that type of presence in the lineup can make a difference. That’s what he is. He’s a difference-maker.” Mitch Moreland also said “He’s definitely a force, and it’s good to have him on our side.” Manager Alex Cora also spoke about the importance of a deep roster. “It’s very important to have a deep roster. As we know the times of guys playing 162, that doesn’t happen often nowadays. The deeper your roster is, the more options as a manager you have.”
It remains to be seen if they can compete with the powerhouse that is the Yankees. But it’s a start Martinez is a power hitter which he can bring power to the middle of the lineup.
