Welcome to the first edition of the Hoyas Weekly, the idea is to recap the weeks’ past games, highlight players and trends and give an overall feel for the season. It was an exciting start to the 2018-2019 season so far. Hope that year 2 of Patrick Ewing as head coach and a freshman class had most around the program buzzing for a continued march back to the top.
The Week That Was:
Georgetown Vs Maryland Eastern Shore: 68-53 W
Georgetown Vs Central Conn. State: 85-78 W
Georgetown Vs Illinois: 88-80 W
Game Of The Week: I have to go with last nights game against Illinois. Why? I was so sick of hearing about how last year this team didn’t play anyone so a true road game versus a quality team was the perfect clap back, oh and they won which makes it that much sweeter. America got a chance to see this crop of young players ball out not without mistakes but make the key plays to get the W. That crossover and one by James Akinjo had me thinking it was AI out there making it do what it do. I am all about this feeding him slowly approach Coach Ewing is taking so far with him, but knowing that with the game on the line the ball is in his hands. This young man has the chance to be special and it’s been a while since we had a guard in a Hoyas uniform we could say that about? The new kids accounted for 61% of the points and Jessie Govan was a force on the boards and on defense.
Player Of The Week: Jessie Govan 17 points per game, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks thru 3 games. He is the unquestioned leader of the team and has gotten off to a solid start to his senior season. Honorable mention to James Akinjo.
Looking Ahead: The Hoyas head to Jamaica for the Jamaican Classic and face Loyola Marymount followed by South Florida and Campbell.
Season Thoughts: I am a give me the bad news first sort of guy so, for me, the turnovers are an issue still. BUT, this is a young team and mistakes will happen it’s just a matter of keeping them to a minimum as the season progresses. Now to the good! When you can start freshmen in a hostile environment they get off to a rocky start and fight back that tells me a couple of things, they have true grit and heart. The youth movement in college basketball is real and it has come to the HillTop No one is talking Final Four this year but we all do want to see better play and improvement and I feel good in saying so far we have that as well as a human highlight reel in Matthew “Mac” McClung teamed up with lighting quick James Akinjo. What was you’re game of the week or key player? I want to hear from the fans all season long and interact. You need to stock up on good snacks, booze and a heart monitor with this squad. Sit back people and enjoy the ride.’
