Last Saturday, the Georgetown Hoyas came back from being down as much as 11 points to beat the last place DePaul Blue Demons. The win pushed the Hoyas conference record to 4-7, 14-10 overall for the season. This has been a year of adjusting and learning for a Hoyas program that began the season with three BIG EAST All-Freshman Team members and hopes of making it back to the big dance. Expectations have changed based on transfers, player development and injuries. One thing that has remained the same is that this team competes and fights each game. I would think it would be hard for even the most unhappy fan of Patrick Ewing to not admit that he has been able to get the most out of his remaining players. With seven conference games and the BIG EAST Tournament to go, all is not lost on the 2019-20 season for the guys in gray. Winners of two of their last three games, the Hoyas are looking at another big opportunity on the road this Saturday against Butler.
So, who are the key players that are keeping a bid to the big dance alive?
Center Omer Yurtseven – 16.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game
Guard Mac McClung – 16.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game
I can’t forget to mention the stellar and steady play of grad transfer Terrell Allen, who has taken over the point guard spot and is doing a great job of leading this team. A few more unsung ballers have been Jagan Mosely, Qudus Wahab and Jahvon Blair. Going with primarily seven players, it has been a true TEAM effort, which is a direct reflection of the coaching staff and the type of message that Ewing is sending. With the transfers and recent injuries, not many would blame them if they made excuses, but instead, we are seeing a true fight. Looking at the upcoming schedule, three of the remaining seven regular season games are at home, and on paper, most seem winnable. Revenge and a chance to pick up a couple of big wins should be on the minds of the Hoyas.
Overall, this season has been defined by the fight of the team and coaches, as well as a fan base that has had to adjust their expectations. The BIG EAST is one of the toughest conferences in the nation. A conference where you have to bring it every night or get run over. We have watched Mac McClung become the go-to scorer. Once he is back on the floor, hopefully his game will continue to grow, along with improved shot selection. Yurtseven has been everything most fans could have hoped for. The Hoyas have one last push, plus the conference tourney, to prove to the committee that they are an NCAA Tournament worthy squad. And once you make it to the dance, ANYTHING can happen.
