The San Diego Padres broadcast team with Don Orsillo and Mark Grant is the best in baseball. But before Don Orsillo and Mark Grant, it was Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy doing Red Sox games. Growing up in Rhode Island sitting in my living room watching Red Sox baseball on the TV I would always keep score and had a dream job of being a broadcaster. I had that vision from watching Orsillo and Remy calling Red Sox games. They brought entertainment to the game and made it fun.
Now that the Red Sox have gone in a different direction and Don Orsillo has been broadcasting Padres games I’ve made the switch as Orsillo and Mark Grant make the game entertaining and more enjoyable. The humor on the Padres broadcast brings me back to those days when I would be in my living room and Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy would be calling Red Sox games.
The great home run calls from Orsillo whether it was Manny Ramirez or David Ortiz then or Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. Now. He’s definitely one of the greatest broadcasters of my lifetime.
Baseball is a long game and the pitch clock helps. But there’s more to it than just the game itself. You have to keep people engaged and that’s what Orsillo does every time.
I don’t understand why anyone would pay $30 a month to watch Red Sox games with a bad product on the field when you can spend $19.99 a month and watch the Major League Padres with a better broadcast. Orsillo, Remy, with the Red Sox, and Orsillo, Grant with the Padres definitely keep the consumer engaged. Like I said I feel like I’m a kid in my living room in East Providence Rhode Island when Orsillo calls a game.
I remember playing whiffle ball in my backyard with kids in the neighborhood and pretending I was Don Orsillo calling the game. Those were some fun times.
His home run calls are electric whether it’s David Oritz, Fernando Tatis Jr Xander Bogaerts. The walk-off and home run calls are my favorite. With the pitch clock making the game go by faster you still don’t want to listen to a boring broadcast. That’s why Orsillo and Mark Grant bring entertainment and comedy to the broadcast and make it fun.
