Now that we’re six episodes in and showrunner Clyde Phillips claims he wants to do multiple seasons with both spinoff shows, Dexter is back! Yes, the serial killer who would come to be known as the Bay Harbor Butcher is clumsily becoming the killer fans grew to love. With Dexter: Original Sin we’re getting the origin story for not only Dexter Morgan but the rest of the characters as well. One of the more troubled characters who played a big role in his life is his sister Deb. What troubled past leads us to the foul-mouthed sister we see in the original show?
Going all the way back to the first season, Debra Morgan is trying to work her way up the food chain in Miami Metro PD but she’s nowhere near that path in Dexter: Original Sin. Right now, Deb is the stereotypical high school student in Miami, Florida. She’s partying it up, more concerned with being a rebel and flirting with what appears to be an older man. So viewers have to wonder, how did she go from being the partying type to being the uptight vice officer obsessed with getting into homicide? Something had to have happened to set her on this path and it has to happen soon. There’s a lot to cover in the 15 years Original Sin is supposed to be set before the original series. Not only do they have to build the story that makes her pivot, but they also have to show the story between then and where we picked up in season one.
Fans of the original series can spot when something is off. If you watched Dexter from beginning to end, there’s a good chance you have a hunch that someone will end up on Dexter’s table sooner rather than later. If you watch Original Sin, you might not be able to explain it, but something seems a little off about Deb’s boyfriend, Gio. Speaking of hunches, everyone seems to think Harry is a damn good cop and policemen in shows such as this usually have pretty good hunches. When Harry tells Dexter to keep an eye on Gio and report back to him, that doesn’t seem like the overprotective father talking, it sounds an awful lot like a hunch kicking in.
Deb struggles later in her life with relationships, more than likely because of the relationship she had with Harry. Could the need to prove herself in Harry’s honor come from wanting to investigate the murder of her own boyfriend and lead her down the path to becoming an officer? Will it be revealed that Gio is not a good man which puts Dexter and him on a collision course? Something breaks in Deb that turns her into the obsessive and driven mess we see her as later in life. Good money is on it having something to do with her past relationships and it probably starts with Gio. Or could it be with the death of her closest friend, Sofia?
