In 2016, Alabama defeated Clemson, 45-40, in the National Championship. Deshaun Watson was 30-47, threw for 407 yards, rushed for 73 yards and had 4 touchdowns and 1 interception, in the loss.
The following season, Watson led Clemson to the National Championship Game again. Clemson won the rematch, 35-31. Watson threw for 420 yards, rushed for 43 yards and had 4 total touchdowns. Nick Saban had about 8 weeks to prepare for Watson in two years, and he couldn’t do it.
Say it out loud… The best defensive coach in the history of college football, was dominated by Watson, not once but twice.
I wanted the New York Jets to draft the Clemson star, but they didn’t. 11 Teams passed on Watson in the 2017 draft.
Cleveland Browns, Miles Garett.
Chicago Bears, Mitchell Trubinski.
San Francisco 49ers, Solomon Thomas.
Jacksonville Jaguars, Leonard Fournette.
Tennessee Titans, Corey Davis.
New York Jets, Jamal Adams.
Los Angeles Chargers, Mike Williams.
Carolina Panthers, Christian McCaffrey.
Cincinnati Bengals, John Ross
Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes.
New Orleans Saints, Marshon Lattimore.
The Bears moved up to select Trubinski, They selected him from The University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels are in the same conference as Clemson, but the Bears passed on Watson, why?
Over his past 17 starts, Watson has a record of 13-4. Patrick Mahomes has a record of 11-5. When Watson gets protection, when he is sacked once or less in a game, he has a record of 7-0.
The 24-year old quarterback is having an MVP-like season. He is completing 69% of his passes, has 17 total touchdowns, 1 interception and is averaging over 5 yards per carry when he runs the ball. Watson is doing this all with a below to average offensive line and a defense that is anything but elite.
The Texans defense is ranked 18th in total yards, 24th in passing yards and 15th in points against.
If I were to take a quarterback over the next 3 years, it would be Watson.
