With the trailer for Superman finally being released, there are a lot of things to get excited about. The character resembles the Superman of old, but what else about the trailer should have you hyped?

Clark/Lois On-Screen Chemistry
While we didn’t get a ton of scenes between Superman and Lois in the trailer, what we did get was enough. Just before the clip of the interview, David Corenswet’s Clark and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois share a very close scene where she asks him to be interviewed as Superman. It’s subtle, but you can catch the excitement in his voice. In this small subtle gesture and the way he looks forward to giving her the exclusive interview, he becomes a bit more vulnerable while also putting her and her career first. Since Clark would literally walk through fire for Lois, the little we’ve seen of the on-screen duo, it’s good to get that sense without having to say it directly.
Clark Kent vs Superman
Another interesting subtlety was in that same sit down we get a sense of two sides to Kal-El. When we hear Clark speak, he has an energetic and soft-spoken approach, but when he says “..Ms Lane” we hear a deeper and more commanding voice. The tiny shift in tone lends to the aura that Superman is a big, strong, commanding hero. There’s no way he could be the soft-spoken, clumsy, and stumbling man that is Clark Kent, despite the two looking alike.
What’s even cooler, is seeing how both personalities exist on their own, but also come through with his “Hey buddy .. eyes up here” remark which seems to be the duality of a powerful hero who has also taken on some human traits. The previous regime had Superman stoic and stoic only. It’s good to see him not only with a personality that connects the characters in the movie but also connects with the audience.
Toned Down The All-Powerful Approach
Yes, Superman is a god-like character but at some point, you can’t make him so unstoppable. Kryptonite may be his only weakness, but if you lean too far into that then you paint yourself into a corner and limit how his adversaries would bring that in naturally. The trailer does feature a scene with Superman feeling the effects of kryptonite in the hands of his enemy, but those aren’t his only moments of weakness.
There has to be the sense that the hero could lose or the plot loses its value. Showing a “weaker” Superman or one that can’t just punch his way through problems allows you to believe that the hero will face some challenges.
Attack on The Fortress of Solitude?
The Fortress of Solitude is named appropriately. Superman routinely retreats to his fortress because of the solitude. He uses it to heal, but he also uses it to shut off the world for a little while. As a character who can hear trouble brewing miles away, this escape represents him tuning out the noise and despair. It has to be as remote as it gets and for Lex Luthor and his crew to not only find it but actively attack it says a lot for him as an adversary. Again, this shows that the hero will face some danger. Wherever he goes, Lex Luthor will always be able to find him.
Green Lantern
Fans have been looking for an accurate on-screen depiction of Green Lantern since the days of Ryan Reynolds. This time around we’re not getting Hal Jordan, but instead Guy Gardner. Why would you get excited about the “understudy” when you wanted the big dog? Easy, effort. James Gunn in one brief clip should have Green Lantern fans excited. Did you see the way Guy manifested a hand to swat away an attack? This isn’t just about the Superman movie. They also have to set up a Lantern series that stars Guy, Hal, Jon Stewart, and probably more Lanterns. To put together an accurate representation of their powers on the screen, it should be just enough of a taste to get fans excited for the new series.
If you’re a long-time Superman fan, this trailer should feel familiar. It captures everything that people connected with Clark and Lois in Superman’s adventures. It may be way too early to know whether it will be good or not, but at least the trailer should have you excited.
