Almost immediately after becoming the No.1 team in college basketball, the Oklahoma Sooners lost their second game of the season to the Iowa State Cyclones. It was only the beginning of a worlwind week for college basketball. In all, 15 of my top 25 ranked teams lost at least one game, including seven teams residing in my top 10.
With the No.2 North Carolina Tar Heels winning both games last week, many thought they would assume the position as the top ranked team. Instead, I’ve kept the Tar Heels a step below the Sooners on my list, as so does the AP Poll.
Due to all of the losses, the No.3 Iowa Hawkeyes moved up six spots. They were followed by the No.4 Kansas Jayhawks, and No.5 Texas A&M Aggies.
The No.24 Duke Blue Devils finally earned a win, after three straight ACC losses, but not before dropping four spots.
The No.10 Providence Friars also rose six spots in my list. They survived an overtime win over the No.6 Villanova Wildcats on the road, despite the treacherous winter storm Jonas threatening travel and delaying the game one day.
I introduced three newcomers to the rankings this week, as well. The No.22 Wichita State Shockers, the No.23 Oregon Ducks and No.25 Notre Dame Fighting Irish made their first appearance in my rankings.
