At a young age, I learned that life is unfair. In 2020, the personification of life being unfair is the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City was able to keep Damien Williams and Sammy Watkins, which I’m sure defenses are thrilled about. So far, they’ve avoided any significant injury. Also, Tyreek Hill has kept his nose clean…for now. Yet, they still get to make five picks in this year’s draft. Shockingly, the Chiefs do have holes they need to fill, which I will now discuss.
Chiefs 2020 Draft Needs
Let’s be honest. Anyone the Chiefs pick up on offense in the draft is just a bonus. If anything, I would imagine teams feel they should be forced to unload some talent. Still, with Showtime Mahomes due to receive a hefty pay raise, Kansas City needs to look at protecting its most valuable asset. Primarily, most of the concerns for the Chiefs lie on the defensive side of the ball.
At cornerback, Kendall Fuller left in free agency, and Bashund Breeland only has a year left on his contract. Reggie Ragland left their linebacking core in free agency. Also, Damien Wilson only has a year left on his deal as well. While Chris Jones is still not signed, I think they get that deal done. So, the Chiefs in the 2020 draft need a cornerback, a linebacker, and an interior lineman. Everything else is just a bonus. Now, I will breakdown the likely picks of Kansas City.
Mock Draft – Rounds 1 to 3
Because they are the Super Bowl champs, the Chiefs pick last in the first round. It is insanely difficult to predict who will be available at this point. Truthfully, I think Kansas City trades back out of the round for more mid-round picks. Assuming they don’t, the Chiefs will show the unfairness of the draft and snag Jonathan Taylor.
Ideally, J.K. Dobbins would be available, but I don’t see that happening. Taylor, though, is no slouch, either. His 4.39 40-speed will fit right in with the Kansas City track stars. More importantly, Taylor would provide the Chiefs with some power. Jonathan may be quick, but he is also 226 pounds and put up 17 bench reps at the combine. I told you. Life is unfair.
In the second round, Kansas City picks 31st. In a cornerback rich draft, I think they can hold off on that pick. Instead, Robert Hunt would be the perfect pick for the Chiefs. Hunt is a big, athletic guard who started four years at Louisiana-Lafayette. Robert’s build is the guard position but has the athleticism to fill in at tackle if needed. With proper coaching, Hunt could be an all-pro within three years. The Chiefs should not pass him up.
Picking last in the third round, the Chiefs will have a chance at Lavert Hill. Hill is not the ideal size at cornerback, but he has good instincts. He won’t win you many foot races, but Lavert’s press coverage is above average. Hill’s press coverage and instincts make up for his lack of speed and size.
