For years, fans of Chicago PD have waited patiently for Kevin Atwater to get a proper storyline. Well, in most cases, a love connection. While he has indulged in things outside of the Intelligence Unit, Atwater is still that one character outside of Hank Voight who has yet to have a real relationship. Why is that? But so far in Season 10, the writers of Chicago PD have placed more of a focus on his character development.
Atwater was dating a social activist/art teacher named Celeste. While the pairing appeared to be a storybook match, it was far from that. What the writers of Chicago PD had done, was take something small and made it more troublesome than what it should have been.
What happened to boy meets girl, boy losses girl, then boy gets girl back and they ride off into the sunset? With Atwater, his first real romantic storyline was way more complicated than any of his Chicago PD counterparts.
Jay Halstead and Erin had issues but their main concern was hiding it from Voight. Ruzek and Kim were set to be married until Ruzek got cold feet. Halstead and Upton’s romance rose up the ranks quickly and now they’re married. But lost in the shuffle has been Atwater.
Who Is The Real Kevin Atwater On Chicago PD?
The relationship with Celestes didn’t pan out ut the issues with Atwater’s development continued to arise. As one of the members of the Unit with a heart and moral compass, Atwater often found himself in hot water. Not only with the outside world, but within the walls of his own Police Department. He went against the grain when he had to out a fellow officer for not following proper protocols. Then he had to deal with being the target of a crusade after shooting an unarmed white kid.
As good as Chicago PD is, one would think that the writers would have the dynamic of character development under control by now.
There is so much more to his character that has yet to be unlocked. One of the main issues was his past and what happened to his parents. While there were whispers in passing, it wasn’t unit recently that viewers got a major part of the story, regarding his father.
Chicago PD did not go the route of the angry black man looking for revenge against his father for not being in his life. It was brought to viewers with Atwater just wanted answers as to why his father did what he did and why he refused to see him.
Kevin raised his brother and sister following the incarceration of his dad and the death of their mother, he was forced to grow up early and you can tell by the way he carries himself. But that still does not let the writers off the hook as to why it has taken them so long to bring the real Kevin Atwater to life. He’s that one person in the Unit that we can actually root for.
