Now that they’ve officially dropped a teaser before the teaser, we can officially talk about Avengers: Doomsday without speculating. Yes, Marvel has confirmed that Steve Rodgers will return for Avengers: Doomsday, and the internet is divided on it. On one side, we have the die-hard fans who love the MCU and will rush out and see it with a smile on their face. On the other side of things is the “what was the point of Endgame” crowd, who are upset despite the smallest hint of plot not being revealed. At this point, it’s completely crazy to pass judgment over 5 seconds of screen time from a teaser before the actual teaser trailer or full trailer yet. Who is to say what Steve Rodgers is even coming back for and what his role is?
If you don’t know what I’m referring to, here’s the trailer:

One of the most popular complaints online is how they spent all this time building characters, only to see the tentpoles of the Infinity Saga return. People have already jumped on the wagon of frustration with Steve coming back, that it’s a shame to have wasted Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson. What people aren’t realizing is the deliberate wording of the trailer. “Steve Rodgers will be returning.” not “Steve Rodgers’ Captain America will be returning.” It’s a very subtle nuance of wording, but it’s intentional. There are plenty of reasons Steve could be coming back.
In this trailer alone, we see Steve living the life he rode off into the sunset for. Just off the top of my head, nothing is saying he’d be putting the shield back on. Who is to say that Steve isn’t the plot device used to remind Bucky and Sam what they’re fighting for? Both characters have been struggling for their purpose in a post-Steve Rodgers/Captain America world. They both look up to Steve and want to make him proud. You’re going to sit here and tell me that Marvel wouldn’t write a story where Steve Rodgers doesn’t show back up and remind Sam and Bucky what he sacrificed? That he had a life with Peggy and a baby wouldn’t remind them of everything he gave up and did to put his trust in them? Wouldn’t he give them the big emotional speech to push them across the finish line of confidence? Seems very anti-Cap to me.
Not to mention, this is the end of the multiverse, or so we think. This whole next phase has been about variants and other universes. Why would we believe that there aren’t different timelines or that Steve didn’t create a time thread that the Avengers now have to go back and fix? Who’s to say that Loki doesn’t see the whole entirety of this story unfold and decide it needed to be fixed? There’s literally a whole bunch of threads Marvel can pull on Avengers: Doomsday, and people are mad off a 1:30 trailer with about 5 seconds of footage of Steve Rodgers. Give it time, then make your judgments.
