Bill O’Brien is the offensive coordinator for the Patriots thank you Robert Kraft. The best thing Kraft did this offseason was put his foot down and tell Belichick to get a real offensive coordinator. O’Brien is the best choice to fix this broken offense from last season. Even one player was quoted in the Herald article last week saying “I love Belichick but he fucked us.” What a quote! And it’s correct putting Matt Patricia as offensive advisor and Judge quarterback coach because they were getting paid by other teams was unresponsible. What Belichick did last season is unexplainable.
Having O’Brien back is huge for Mac Jones and a relief. One thing is they both know each other, and O’Brien knows his skill set. Note to Bill Belichick is to keep his hands off of the offense and let O’Brien handle that side of the ball. Let him pick his offensive line coach and Bill just concentrates on the defense. Joe Judge stay away from the offense and go back to special teams. Also, put Matt Patricia upstairs in a box like a Ernie Adams role.
Bill O’Brien Can Get The Offense Back On Track
O’Brien can finally get the tight ends involved more and also Kendrick Bourne. Bourne, was in the Patricia doghouse in 2022 because he talked back to Patricia. Jakobi Meyers Mac’s favorite target should be resigned and on the roster in 2023. I expect the Patriots to go back to their old offense with a mix of what Mac did at Alabama. Also maybe incorporate the Shanahan offense to a point. At least O’Brien will know what he’s doing. With a real offensive line coach and some talent on the O-Line Jones should be protected better. At least for Jones it will just be O’Brien talking in his helmet instead of what it was last year. Bill Belichick, Matt Patricia, and Joe Judge were all in Mac’s helmet which is why there was always a delay of game penalties. No wonder why Mac got pissed all the time and waved off Patricia.
Bill Belichick On The Decline
When you look at Bill Belichick and his coaching you can say he’s on the decline. Look at the 49ers Kyle Shannahan played the NFC title game with a rookie quarterback against the Eagles. The Bengals made the AFC title game for the second year in a row. Both teams have drafted and developed young talent for the last few years. Meanwhile, Belichick spends millions on free agents, brings back his friends getting paid by other teams to be coaches, and fails his second-year quarterback in Mac Jones. I’d take the young blood coaching right now over the Bill Belichick type of coaching. I think it’s dated.
I’m hoping with the start of free agency starting in March we will start to see some changes on offense. Resign Jakobi Meyers, get another receiver that’s better than Parker, and draft an offensive tackle that’s better than Isaiah Wynn. We need a clear picture of Mac Jones of what he can be and I think we will get that in 2023.
