After an intense viewing of the seven season drama and subsequently the two season Bosch: Legacy, Amazon Studio’s Bosch left a profound impact on me. Harry Bosch, the main character is a stoic figure, helping find justice on the streets of Los Angeles as a homicide detective for LAPD. Spoilers ahead. As a young boy, Harry Bosch was introduced into the world of killings through the murder of his mother. A prostitute, her case due to her job and the time of when it occurred was never solved (read the rest before you say something).
Defining his pursuit of justice, his mother’s case along with the cases of three other victims forces Bosch to adopt the moniker “everybody matters or nobody matters.”
Over the length of the show, Bosch solves many crimes including the one of his mother. Her assailant, Bradley Walker was taken down by Bosch and his partner, Detective Jerry Edgar. Yet we haven’t heard a thing about Walker since. He should be going to prison for the rest of his life but wouldn’t someone accused of murder, with such a deep, intertwined relationship with the police draw buzz, especially from Scott Anderson? Wouldn’t his case have an effect on Bosch like Kurt Dockweiler did on Maddie? Wouldn’t lifting such a weight drastically change Bosch’s mindset? Questions like these remain unanswered.
In fact, I have a list of questions I wish would be answered. Here are some of them.
Bosch’s lingering questions
What happened to Reggie Woo? Reggie Woo, the husband of Elanor Wish and stepfather of Maddie Bosch, plays an indelible role in the life of his stepdaughter. Working in this weird dynamic of parenting, Bosch, Elanor, and Reggie seemingly get along very well, especially for co-parents. Maddie is especially close to Reggie as Reggie fills the fatherly void left by Bosch.
Eventually, Elanor and Reggie move back to Hong Kong. Things happen and Reggie begins being hunted by the Chinese government. Last we hear, Reggie fixes things and that’s it. We never hear from Reggie again. Was Reggie notified of Elanor’s death, wouldn’t he respond considering who ordered the hit, wouldn’t Reggie come to the funeral? What about his relationship with Maddie? Did it just disappear? Considering his place in the family, one would think a character that has one degree of separation from two major characters would get a proper story.
Who was really behind the murder of Elanor Wish? Yes we understand the connection to the Chinese that got Elanor killed but we really never learned how the Chinese found out. What happened to the true killer? Remember when Bosch and Edgar swiped FBI agent Jay Griffin’s phone and turned it over to see if he was the snitch? What came of that? One would think that considering the closeness of the victim, Bosch would go diving for more.
What was the punishments levied against Det. Sheehan and Det. Drake? In season four, Bradley Walker was arrested based on a murder of a lawyer. That lawyer was about to take footage of Det. Sheehan and Det. Drake torturing a black man in pursuit of the location of a missing child. The man was innocent and the lawyer was about to take the video public. Well Walker ended up being the murderer, the torture case got settled and we never heard of it again. What happened to the detectives? Did they get charged? Was it buried? Did they get fired? We’ll never know.
How did the Alicia Kent case turn out? During the final season of Bosch, Alicia Kent was a woman charged with orchestrating the murder of her husband. Bosch had the case. Bosch also was in court, against Kent. Honey Chandler is Kent’s lawyer. Well we never had a solution in that case. What happened? Wouldn’t Bosch be unable to testify against Kent if he’s working with Honey Chandler? They just brushed over that.
Did Lt. Billets make captain? It’s a simple question. Did she?
Wouldn’t Lt. Billets be one of the first to arrive to Maddie going missing? Her absence was quite odd. Especially when you consider how many of Bosch’s former coworkers appeared in Bosch: Legacy. Who knows?
I thoroughly enjoyed Bosch and I’m coming around with Bosch: Legacy. They’re great shows that have great stories. However it’s also plagued by massive plot holes and contradictions. I hope the writers in future years answer some of these questions.
