I’ve been saying since Bill O’Brien got here he wasn’t brought here to help a backup, he was brought here to get Mac Jones back on track. Friday nights game against the Titans Zappe was getting killed by the weak offensive line however, he fumbled the ball too much and threw the ball in coverage a lot. He isn’t good and is worse with a real offensive coordinator.
It got so bad that Bill O’Brien was chewing him out on the sideline. After playing the first half he was in there for the second and couldn’t get it going. I’m looking forward to the talking heads on the radio on Monday talking about how Zappe could take Mac’s job. Zappe hasn’t had a great training camp and he’s been working with the second team most of the time.
“Zappe Fever” is over and never should’ve been a thing
I think it’s funny when “Zappe Fever” was a thing last year against two teams that sucked was a fluke. Patricia and Judge made it simple for the backup and harder on Jones. This year it’s the complete opposite going back to what you’ve been doing for the last 20 years with sprinkling in things Mac is also good at. Notice how it’s changed and the offense is more towards Mac’s game.
Zappe all camp has looked stiff while Jones is looser and has more confidence. Jones has more command of the offense under O’Brien than Zappe does. Zappe also looks lost which was apparent during Friday night’s game. Zappe I think will make the team because they need a backup but the quarterback depth doesn’t look great behind Jones.
Kraft didn’t like the way Belichick handled the Mac Jones/ Bailey Zappe situation last year
It is pretty laughable Belichick, Patricia, and Judge preferred Zappe over Jones last year after watching that product on Friday night. Kraft saw what they were doing on offense last year during the season. It made no sense which is why Kraft stepped in and brought Bill O’Brien to get Mac back on track. Kraft said this back in the owners meetings.
Remember during training camp when Zappe was asked about comparing last year’s offense to Bill O’Brien’s offense his answer was this.
“I wouldn’t say there’s a big difference. Of course there’s some wrinkles he brought in.”
From that comment that right there should tell you he has no clue what he’s talking about. He feels like well last year’s program worked under Patricia I got all the easy play-action plays what will O’Brien bring that’s any different? Well, O’Brien has brought RPO’s back more play-action and screens that Zappe has trouble with. Why? Because again O’Brien was brought here to get Mac Jones back on track not help a backup quarterback.
