Sometimes the WNBA is a tough journey. Players work their entire childhood to chase their dreams and end up not being able to play in one game. Why is that? It’s because of the slow growth of the league that has limited roster spots. As talented as many players are, many do not get the opportunity to suit up for a WNBA team.
The journey to the WNBA wasn’t an easy route for Taj Cole. She had to bounce from one college program to another before really establishing herself. Cole began to have eyes on her during her sophomore season at Georgia. In her two seasons as a Bulldog, she continued to elevate as a scorer and playmaker. Cole played a big role in helping Georgia remain one of the top contenders in the SEC.
To finish her college career, Cole transferred to Virginia Tech and emerged as one of their important pieces. Playing under head coach Kenny Brooks will help a player find a formula for success. Cole averaged 9.6 points along with 5.1 rebounds. She helped the team end the season with a 21-9 record while also being named to the All-ACC Defensive Team.
Throughout her college career, Taj Cole continued to increase her draft stock. WNBA General Managers loved the motor that she played with. Cole displayed a burst of speed with the basketball in her hands and can do a multitude of things by shooting, attacking, and playmaking. With that being said, signed with the Connecticut Sun on a Training Camp contract in 2022, which was her first taste of the WNBA level.
Since that point, Taj Cole still has yet to play a WNBA game. As I mentioned before, limited roster spots have prevented talented players from displaying their skill set at the next level. Some players accept the fact that they may never land on a WNBA roster. They’ll begin their careers overseas and never look back. However, Cole never stopped believing in her dreams of playing in the WNBA. She continued to work hard and continue to progress until she received her opportunity.
It took spending time in Spain to get Cole’s professional career started. It also took playing three seasons at Athletes Unlimited and emerging as a shining star. The journey has allowed Cole to finally get another opportunity in the WNBA. The Atlanta Dream announced that they signed her to a Training Camp contract.
Atlanta is a destination where many young players want to play. The culture of the Dream is amazing and they’re building something special. Heading into training camp, Cole will get to play in the same gym next to Rhyne Howard. Allisha Gray, Tina Charles, Cheyenne Parker, Jordin Canada, and other great players.
The goal for Taj Cole heading into Training Camp is to prove that she belongs. Her high IQ should be on full display as she looks to be coachable and make the right plays. As we have seen at Athletes Unlimited, Cole can be a huge asset that can lead a team to success. The same can potentially take place this season for the Atlanta Dream.
