Defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos will have the opportunity to choose his next club after Arsenal agreed to terminate his contract earlier today.
Sokratis’s contract with the Gunners was set to expire at the end of the season, but the Greek International has not featured in the Premier League or Europa League squads during the 2020-2021 season. The last time Sokratis made a senior squad appearance was when he came on as a substitute during Arsenal’s FA Cup victory in August.
Sokratis joined Arsenal in 2018 from German giants Borussia Dortmund. In his first season at the club, he was a key member of the first team as he helped lead Arsenal to the Europa League final. In his second season, he struggled to get into the squad only making 19 appearances throughout the experience. Over the summer the defender was made aware he was not involved in Mikel Arteta’s plans going forward.
Sokratis has drawn attention from Italy with clubs Lazio, Napoli, and Roma looking to sign the defender during the January transfer window.
