Commanders’ Growing Injury List Puts Their Depth to the Test

Washington Commanders 2026-27

WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders traveled to London already knowing injuries would test their depth.

They returned home with an even bigger problem.

Washington’s 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts dropped the Commanders to 1-3, but the record was not the only concern coming out of Sunday. Quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered an MCL sprain, wide receiver and return specialist Jaylin Lane fractured and dislocated his ankle, and a roster already missing several important players took another hit.

For a team trying to find consistency through the first month of the season, the injuries are beginning to become part of its identity.

The quarterback situation is the most immediate example.

Jayden Daniels missed his second consecutive game while recovering from a dislocated left elbow, leaving Mariota to make another start in his place. Mariota had already helped Washington survive without Daniels once, guiding the Commanders to a 33-31 victory over Seattle the previous week.

Against Indianapolis, he barely had time to settle in.

Mariota completed three of four passes for 46 yards and added a 35-yard run before injuring his right knee on a first-quarter sack. He left the field under his own power but did not return, forcing seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis into his first regular-season NFL action.

Kaliakmanis completed 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown, and one interception as Washington struggled to keep pace with Indianapolis. He became the first quarterback from the 2026 draft class to appear in a regular-season game.

The Commanders now find themselves in an unusual position. Their starting quarterback is working his way back from an elbow injury, his veteran backup has injured his MCL, and the rookie who entered the season as a developmental third option has already been forced onto the field.

Mariota’s injury is also more concerning because it is the same MCL he injured during training camp. Head coach Dan Quinn said Monday that there is no exact timetable for his return, although Mariota is expected to work off to the side as he begins the recovery process.

That makes Daniels’ progress even more important.

Daniels returned to limited practice last week while wearing a brace on his left arm, but Washington decided to keep him out against Indianapolis. The brace is designed to prevent his elbow from fully extending and reduce the risk of another dislocation.

There are encouraging signs surrounding his recovery, but Washington cannot afford to view Daniels’ potential return as a solution to everything that has gone wrong.

That is because the injuries extend well beyond the quarterback.

Washington’s Depth Is Being Tested Everywhere

Lane suffered one of the most significant injuries Sunday when he fractured and dislocated his ankle during a kickoff return in the third quarter. Quinn confirmed Monday that Lane will miss the remainder of the season.

His loss removes more than another receiver from Washington’s depth chart.

Lane had established himself as an important special teams contributor and return specialist. Losing him forces Washington to adjust another part of its roster while already dealing with injuries throughout the offense.

Terry McLaurin missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. Rachaad White was unavailable because of a shoulder injury. Sam Cosmi was ruled out with a concussion and throat issues, while the offensive line has already been playing without left tackle Laremy Tunsil because of a torn triceps.

Those absences have created a difficult environment for any quarterback Washington puts behind center.

The Commanders entered the season expecting Daniels to lead an offense that could build on his development. Instead, Washington has already started multiple quarterbacks and has been forced to adjust personnel around them.

The result has been an offense searching for consistency.

Sunday was another example.

Washington managed just 13 points against Indianapolis and struggled to sustain drives after Mariota left the game. Kaliakmanis showed some composure after being unexpectedly pushed into action, but asking a seventh-round rookie to rescue an offense missing several important pieces was always going to be difficult.

That is why Washington’s problems cannot simply be reduced to whether Daniels returns this week.

Getting the franchise quarterback back would obviously change the outlook of the offense. Daniels gives Washington a dynamic element that neither Mariota nor Kaliakmanis can completely replicate, particularly with his ability to create outside of structure.

But even Daniels needs help around him.

A quarterback returning from a second elbow dislocation should not also be expected to compensate for instability along the offensive line, injuries at the skill positions, and a team that has struggled to establish consistency through four weeks.

That is the bigger concern for Washington.

Daniels’ Return Can Help, but It Cannot Fix Everything.

The Commanders are only four games into the season, which leaves plenty of time for their situation to change.

Daniels was able to practice on a limited basis throughout last week, and Washington will continue evaluating him as it prepares for Week 5. White is also expected to work his way back toward practice, potentially giving the backfield another option.

Getting healthier would provide a much-needed boost.

But the first month of Washington’s season has already shown how quickly depth can disappear.

Mariota was supposed to provide stability if Daniels missed time. He did exactly that against Seattle, helping Washington secure its first win of the season. One week later, Mariota was standing on the sideline with an injured knee while a rookie quarterback attempted to keep the offense moving.

Lane entered Sunday as another young player capable of contributing in multiple ways. His season is now over.

Those are the realities Washington must navigate while sitting at 1-3.

The Commanders cannot control every injury, but they can control how prepared they are when another player is asked to step into a larger role. Kaliakmanis received that opportunity unexpectedly on Sunday. Other young players and backups could be next.

Washington’s depth was always going to matter over a 17-game season. Four weeks in, it already matters more than the Commanders probably expected.

Daniels ‘ return would provide the most obvious reason for optimism, especially with Mariota now dealing with his own injury. But Washington cannot place the responsibility for fixing its season entirely on the quarterback coming back from a dislocated elbow.

The offensive line needs to protect him. The remaining playmakers need to stay available. The defense must prevent games from getting away from Washington when the offense struggles. And the coaching staff must find answers when the depth chart changes unexpectedly.

The Commanders left London with their third loss in four games.

More importantly, they left with another reminder of how thin the difference can become between the team they planned to field and the one available on Sunday.

Getting Daniels back would help Washington tremendously. Keeping enough healthy players around him may be the bigger challenge.
