On July 6, 2026, the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) announced the team names and logos of its inaugural four teams ahead of the first season, set to start August 1st. Each of these names is inspired by pioneering women.
San Francisco Firebells
The team’s namesake is Lillie Hitchcock Coit, aka Firebelle Lil. She was a champion of San Francisco’s volunteer firefighters and a benefactor of the iconic Coit Tower. The logo is a fusion of the iconic fire bell overlaid by a phoenix, representing San Francisco’s resilience and ability to rebuild stronger than before.
New York Heights
The team’s namesake is Dorothy Irene Height, a civil rights and women’s rights leader from New York. The logo features nods to the New York Skyline formed by movement lines off of a baseball, alluding to speed, precision, and audacity.
Los Angeles Queens
The team’s namesake is Lizzie Murphy, a baseball legend known as “Queen of the Diamond”. She was the first woman to play against major league players. As such, the logo is the Letter Q with 4 baseball diamonds, a reflection of a crown that calls for power and respect.
Boston Hunters
The team’s namesake is Hariot K. Hunt, the first woman to apply to Harvard Medical School and establish a successful medical practice in the United States. The bird on the logo is an osprey, representing instinct and action.
The debut season of the WPBL is exciting enough, but the recognition of these women through the team identities is nothing short of incredible.
“Today marks a historic milestone for professional baseball, and all of women’s professional sports, as we introduce four team identities that honor the legacies of specific women who chose to forge new paths for themselves and generations of women who followed,” said Justine Siegel, Commissioner of the WPBL. “The WPBL stands on the shoulders of these incredible women who fought for their place in history and on the diamond long before us. These names are not just symbols; they represent the grit, audacity, and excellence that our athletes will bring to the field this August.”
