This Saturday is the final non-conference game before the Big Ten matchups. For Head Coach Mike Locksley, this game has a special effect. An alumnus of Towson University, who played football for three years as a safety from 1988 to 1991. 1992 marked the start of his coaching career there as well.
Coming off a victory that was underwhelming against NIU, 20-9. The first half of the game was the key takeaway. The Huskies converted 50% of their third and fourth-down plays.
Offensively, for the Terps, there is still work that needs to be done. At this point, Malik Washington, the starting quarterback, is showing poise and leadership, limiting mistakes.
For example, the Terrapins had three penalties compared to the 14 penalties against FAU.
The Towson Tigers, who are 2-0 in the year, are coming off the 29th matchup against Morgan State, defeating the Bears 27-22. Week one, the Tigers also spoiled the coaching debut of Michael Vick and Norfolk State.
Between the Terrapins and Tigers, this is the fourth matchup in the series, with Maryland currently holding a 3-0 lead. The last matchup was in 2023, Maryland defeated Towson 38-6. In the 26 non-conference games, the Terrapins have committed no more than two turnovers in each game. The Tigers have been outscored 129-26 in the three matchups.
Keys to Victory
How does Maryland’s offense respond after NIU?
Friday was an ugly win for the Terrapins, and freshman quarterback Malik Washington had a subpar game. 19-for-35 with 254 yards, two touchdowns, and one turnover. The defense, for the most part, stepped up and made crucial stops. As Maryland prepares to transition to Big Ten Play, the key is to be consistent for all four quarters. So far, in these two non-conference games, it has yet to be seen.
Towson is riding high on momentum.
One thing that stood out as the Tigers and Bears played. Morgan State stat-wise outperformed 417 to 249 total yards. The Tigers forced three turnovers and two red-zone stops. This roster has a good depth of players returning from last season. Going 7-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Sean Brown is the starting quarterback, with John Dunmore in their final season together.
The 2025 Towson Tigers roster, led by head coach Pete Shinnick, achieved its first winning season in five years.
