AJ Lee has returned to WWE after more than a decade out of the ring. Just in time for suicide prevention month, after her mental health decline led to her leaving the industry. And it has sent shockwaves through the wrestling world, sparking fan frenzy, emotional reunions, and a fresh storyline with deep roots in her past. Let’s dive into what unfolded, what’s next, and why her comeback feels so momentous/fabulous.
AJ Lee’s Triumphant Return:
On September 5, 2025, AJ Lee made her long-awaited surprise appearance on Friday Night SmackDown in Chicago, her hometown. How iconic is it to come back from the dust in your HOMETOWN!?
The return came in a dramatic setup: Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins were cutting promo heat when CM Punk intervened, saying he’d never hit a woman—but someone else would. Cue a deafening pop as AJ’s iconic theme “Let’s Light It Up” played and she sprinted to the ring, delivering a stunning comeback punch to Lynch Followed by jumping into her husband’s arms (CM Punk).
Apparently, there was a contract signed regarding AJ, and she is making a Full-Time Comeback. It’s been confirmed.
AJ wasn’t just there for a cameo. She officially signed a new multi-year WWE contract during a backstage segment with Triple H.
Her return lit up social media—videos of the moment gathered almost 3 million views in just 15 hours, and I was one of those. I saw her return on TikTok and then had to go watch the actual match! I was an OG lover of AJ Lee. I am thrilled to see her back.
SmackDown’s viewership surged 38% for this crazy.
And now we come to Wrestlepalooza Showdown:
The stage is set for a high-stakes mixed tag match at WrestlePalooza (September 20). AJ and CM Punk will face off against Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins in what’s likely going to be the event of the evening.
I am excited to see what happens! I honestly think Becky and Seth are going to lose to the OG Crazy Couple! (And yes, they are married in real life!)
